Default LR3 rear brake plates hack

Has anyone take a new one piece rear brake plate and cut it in half and install it on the LR3 like the ones they sell from Atlantic British? It seems a lot to pay $350 dollars for

the rear brake split backing plate kit when you could just buy 2 solid ones and cut them yourself. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

I am sure you could do it. My rule of thumb is that if those are shot, the bearings themselves are not far behind anyway. Best to just bit the bullet and do a full refurb. What I did thought was to source two new rear knuckles which I found for very, very good prices over a year of searching. Then I built them up with new plates, bearings and such and swapped em in whole. I also put several more layers of paint on those things since they rust so easily.

edit: How much you like/hate your tires? My Duelers cracked in 6 months and I had to warranty exchange em. And I never even used them off road to that point. Then with the new set I was in some soft wet sand and could not get out without a winch. Will see how they do in snow, but I am not impressed so far. The Toyos I wanted were not available at all for months yet.

Wow, are those seriously 350 bucks? Junk yard time, if you ask me. Assuming the donor is from the South or the West and rust free like all mine have been....

Ah I see those are meant to help w replacement when you don't want to do the hub etc. Never needed to do either in the rear on mine.

I'm with Dakota though, if your backing plate is rotted then seems likely your bearings probably are shot or soon to be too.
I also think a grinder cut off wheel could quickly convert a single piece rust free junkyard $5 plate into one of these

Yup that's what I was thinking. I'm just going to cut off the old ones buy the new ones for about $90 a piece and cut them with my grinder in the same spots as the ones you can buy for $350, yikes!!! I'll report back when I'm done and if I'm successful.

New ones can be found for as cheap as $30, FYI. So worth the shot to see you can make it work.

Hi,
I know this is an older post, but did you ever get around to doing this? I've got some that I'm thinking of cutting, but concerned on losing the strength without bracing/welding.
Cheers
