Default LR3 rear diff software update for P186D - Transmission Fault

Anyone familiar with this one?

https://static.oemdtc.com/TSB/LTB00228NAS4.pdf

I have been getting this error when taking the truck into situations where the rear diff would need to lock. Upon reading, some just replaced the rear motor. I guess there is one place to get them that does not require a recalibration or such. The other option, which I want to do, involves the software update above.

So question are about the GAP tool. Can it push this update if I get the file from them? And can the GAP tool recalibrate the diff incase I do swap the actuator motor? I dont have the tool, but really need to get one soon. If no one has an answer, I will contact the makers of the tool. Thought I would ask here first to get hands on input.

To the best of my knowledge it can. Abran would know better than I

But remember you should always take it to the dealer...

Gap does the calibration and they can provide the software if needed.

I have only ever recalibrated without issue.

....any noises from your diff? If you are just replacing the locking motor, you should be sure your clutch packs aren't compromised. Mine was making a "clunk" sound in some cases as a result of the actuator going out. I wound up replacing both.

I dont think there is any noise, at least not regular. Its just when I am in the mud with a program that can operated the rear locker I get the occasional fault about reduced traction. I do not use the rear diff a lot at all, but the problem seems to be getting a little worse. So when doing research, I found that TSB file. I actually have no clue how to find out if the software update was done already, I assume not even though it has a long history of LR dealer services. At one time I did hear a loud clunk, sorta metallic ring or such. Which from what I read can be another sign but it could have been a number of things that caused it. Maybe the same sound you heard. Hard to say. For now I am just not using the rear locker.

So I figured I would update first to see if the code still comes up. If it does, then I will replace the actuator motor. Also I guess one can read clutch life in the diff with the tool? Not sure how accurate that is or how its calculated.

The clunk I heard was pretty easily reproduced. I'd just put it in a program where I'd expect the locker to lock and load it somehow like a turn or I think taking it on the dealer's off-road "course" produced it.

How would you not use the locker? You mean keeping TR in the General setting?

Yeah, I just keep it in the normal mode - no special programs.

That must really hamper your off-road ability, though....what has been your experience? More TC engagement? I'd think Normal mode would made it such that your center diff rarely locks up too.

I think in normal nothing locks, including the TC. But the truck does really well. Went up a sand dune last weekend with no issue.
