LR3 Rust Proofing
Hey Guys,
Winter is starting early this year up here in Michigan. Salt is going to be used heavily, probably more heavily than last year. Had a lot of friends with rusted vehicles because of the amount of salt last year. Didn't drive the LR3 a ton last year but I am paranoid about rust. I found a shop in town that will do a drip type rust proofing for $225. Money is a bit tight so I was wondering if it is even worth it on the LR3. Is it pretty resilient already? Or should I take this step to protect myself?
Thanks

I would recommend a professional job at Ziebart. Why go with a discount deal, the consequences suck.

Here in Seattle they sell an aerosol can driven product called "BOESHIELD," named as such because it was developed by The Boeing Company. It is an anti-rust, anti-corrosion spray that I use on mine. We don't encounter a lot of salt in the PAC NW but that stuff seems to protect well. If you skip the $225 job, at least try to get some of this stuff. May be sold in a marine supply store. People use it on boats.
eastwood sells a special coating spray to coat inside the boxed frame has a long tube with special spray tip
funny thing with rust coating is i remember whaen younger seeing real bad rotted vehicles in junkyards in n.j. and most of the time they had the rusty jones decal for rustproofing lol
best thing is probly just touchless carwash that sprays underneigth this is a big concern to me for my wifes cause i want/need the lr3 to last her a long time and right now it appears rust free, think the window sticker listed a zinc coated frame?
my dads avalanche is falling apart literaly from rust, had the dam brake lines replaced and last month a gas tank strap fell off and he ran it over
my brothers truck, sandblast the frame and por15 to the directions a year later its peeling off and the rust is coming off in chunks and we live in n.j. outside philly, they love sparying that brine on the roads which i think is more the issue cause it gets in everything

Get it waxoyled or buy yourself a few cans and do it yourself. They sell the aerosal cans that you can spray for the underbody and for the interior of your frame. $16 a can. Here's a link to a Northeast dealer. Or you can buy larger quantity and spray it on with a wand.

Thanks for the tips. The guy I got the price from has been doing it for a long time, and is pretty reputable. I'm all for doing something myself although I'm not sure how well I can get everything coated on my own. I'm not a fan of the idea of spraying on a black coating to try and protect my vehicle. Especially when it comes time to do work on it and everything is covered in hard wax. What I am worried about is creating a problem where one doesn't exist, so far the rust is minimal. Maybe I should just wash it more frequently and spray the under-body with water. I have heard that rust proofing can do the opposite of rust proofing.
Per the link below, I back in spring of 2010, installed an electronic rust proofing device. I cannot really say if it is working - well it is still flashing away but as to does it stop rust, I am not certain.
I see some discolouration / rust around the hitch area at the rear and the new front arms I put on three years ago are not shiny black any longer but there is certainly no body perforation or even the hint of same.
It is an alternative to consider as there is no black sticky stuff all over.
