LR3 For Sale - Sadly Too Good To Be True...
Hi All,
Happy New Year!
I have been keeping an eye out for the past couple of months for an additional LR3. Will be keeping mine, probably make it more of an off-road trail rig, and I will share the new one with my daughter.
Anyway, came across this one yesterday - https://www.auto4lessonline.com/inve...SE-Pasadena-TX
In case the link is down, it is an 08 HSE with only 62,000 miles. For $9,995. In other words, CHEAP. Near Houston, Texas.
I was particularly interested because I'm looking for an 07 or 08, with low miles.
Spoke with the seller today. 1st question I asked: "Any flood damage?" Answer - Yes. Actually a Salvage Title, due to this. Dang it. And there's also apparently an air suspension error code. He said it was only a bad ride height sensor, and of course in the spirit of 'trust but verify', I chose not to believe him unless he could prove it. So anyway, I offered $6,000, figuring I'll go and take a look, and especially examine the entire wiring areas beneath the door sills. And of course do the other standard 'flood damage' inspections - Weird smell, rust on upper-engine metal areas, examine beneath all carpets, water in fluids, etc. Additionally I would arrange for an independent inspection at a qualified mechanic, if I wanted to pursue it further. He said he'll talk with his manager.
Meanwhile, he sent me an Auto Check Report, so that I could start to investigate further -

Here's where it gets quite interesting - Between 4/11/17 and 4/20/18 the mileage DROPPED from 138,689 down to 50,137. Dang it.
Obviously not pursuing it, but figured I would share my short period of slight excitement, followed by a short period of mild disappointment.
Please keep an eye out for a low mileage LR3 for me...
Cheers, Simon.

Wow, thats sucks. If the milage reports steadily climbed, then dropped, it probably is indeed fraud. But is that even possible in an LR3? I though the cluster was encoded. I say this because its happen plenty of times that a vehicle goes in for service and someone enters the wrong milage. But indeed, in THIS case something is up. Because it does climb, steadily. Then the last two show a dramatic drop and match the sale photo. I wonder if instead of a cluster swap if its been VIN swapped - but then it would not show all the flood damage.
And that some CRAZY title history after the flood damage. Like a hot potato tossed around.

I live near that car. I looked at it before I bought my 2006 SE last month. I am furloughed at the moment and I have time to go look at it if you are really interested. ( I can plug in my Gap tool and email you the fault codes too.)

If ever there was a vehicle that I would RUN and not walk away from buying...it would be that one. Flood history I might be able to live with on some cars/trucks but the qty of circuit boards on these trucks really don't mix well with water! Then an odometer rollback of that magnitude?! Way too many stories there and I would be content to let that be anyone else's headache and not make it mine.
Good for you OP in doing some basic homework...more than likely some clueless soul will get sucked into owning it and pay the consequences.
