Default LR3 shifting issue 3rd to 4th

Hi I have an old 2006 LR3 V8 its in Kenya and its covered over 170,000km, runs like a dream but sometimes misses shifting from 3rd to 4th, I work 300km from home and on a drive to and fro it will miss maybe once to three times when driving the 300km, in auto, in sport and in manual, it does not matter what I have selected. sometimes it then goes into fault but a switch off and on and all is well again. The gears are not slipping and it’s only 3rd to 4th no other time and very intermittently, anyone any idea where to start? I changed the sump (Filter) and oil at 165,000km.

What does that mean, precisely..."misses the shift?" do you mean it shifts from 3rd to 5th? Or that it revs out in 3rd and doesn't shift at all?

No, more that it tries to shift from 3rd to fourth but finds neutral, revs very high then finds third again, if you back off the throttle it returns to normal and finds its gears, and behaves completely normal for another 100km or so.

I would say its a valve body issue, when the seals wear they lose line pressure and dont shift correctly. Could be seals, dud solenoids, leaking separator gasket or valve body seals. 170k isnt a lot, i've just ticked over 180k in my TDV6 and starting to have a similar shift issue except mine happens at 1-2 shift, otherwise smooth and rocket like performance.

@Andy McDonnell was this indeed a trans replacement? or was there something else causing this?
