Lr3 showdown
#2
There are some 100,000 miles plus units out there. IMHO the rub comes with suggested maintenance. If you go by the book, which I have attached, as one example you would not have changed the differential fluid in either vehicle. The LR3 is about 1300 pounds heavier than a D1, and has a front differential fluid capacity that is about 1/3 that of a D1. Less than what goes in two soda cans. And the LR3 has a more powerful engine, of which 50% of the power is being sent to the front diff. So you certainly would have more stress on this smaller part, cooled by splash lubrication of a smaller volume of fluid.
But the marketting mavens decide that to compete in the "cost of maintenace" they will extend the drain interval to 150,000 miles or ten years. What do they care, it will be out of warranty.
I have attached the factory scheduled maintenace list from the LR3 shop manual. I think owners should think long and hard about more frequent oil and fluid changes.
Now, I'm just an owner of an old D1. The LR3 is a wonderfully complex vehicle, and needs a very good battery in top shape. If you can have an indy inspection that would be money well spent, and also get you associated with an indy mechanic familiar with the beasts.
