LR3 Transmission Flush and Software Update
Hey guys i have question about Flushing the transmission.Im at 116k and i have done the filter and fluid change at around 90k. I know it might be a little too soon but a regular filter and fluid change doesn't take much of the old fluid anyway. I also have a weird downshift clunk and sometimes the transmission doesn't know which gear to be in?a little sluggish when climbing a hill too.
I wanted to get the software updated but the dealership said i have too many miles for this service.Does this sound normal and has anyone done it at this mileage and have good results?
Has anyone tried the BG transmission flush?

Id hate to live with this clunk.it upshifts perfect just sometimes the downshift acts up when coming to a stop.I talked to a german indy and they said they could do it but im worried if itll make things worse.

I have flushed the fluid myself, but have not done the BG transmission flush on this car. I did, however, do a BG flush on a previous Accord with pretty bad results. My $0.02 is that transmission flushes can be a good preventive maintenance action, but they will not solve underlying issues with the transmission. In many cases, I believe they actually make them worse. So, if you're at the point where you're already having issues, and if you changed the fluid fairly recently already, then I doubt a flush would do much good.

My exerience and advice would be to take the truck to the best transmission shop in your area to have them assess the transmission. I took mine in to be flushed and for the software updates and was told the fluid was still good and while they would love to take my money, the flush wasn't necessary... they said have had mixed success with doing the updates as the Landies are very particular in how the updates are preformed apparantly as its not just the transmission ecu that needs updating but others as well. They actually referred me to the dealership for the update which I just booked for next week.... I asked the service advisor if there was a mileage cutoff for doing the update and they said that when they plug in, if it says updates are needed, they will do them, regardless of mileage. The tranny shop said that our tranny's have multiple screen filters throughout the transmission and that flushing them is not an issue if it needs it. I will ley you know if the update was successful in eliminating the 2-3 second lag from stop to go.

Also to add that the trans shop said that the transmissions in our trucks and in all newer vehicles are no where near the same as the transmissions that we all grew up with. He sends his techs for training every 3 months to keep up on the latest diagnostic and repair protocols out there. Dealerships do not have properly trained tranny techs and don't even have the proper equipment to do teesting on them to pinpoint problems. He told me of a VW owner who was told by two different dealerships that he needed a new transmission. When they tested the valve bodies on their new specialty equipment, it turned out it was a $250 dollars fix instead of a $6000 replacement.
I would recommend to everyone on this forum that you find the best tranny tech in your area that keeps up to date with their training and diagnostic equipment upgrades and have your Landies assessed there. The dealership and indy techs will only be making guesses and more that likely will just advise to replace rather than repair.
