Default LR3 Transmissions, how robust are they?

Can any Techs out there tell me how robust the LR3 Auto Trans Is? A guy I know has a 2006 HSE and his Trans Pan split and he had a large leak of Trans Fluid. He had the Trans Pan replaced and new fluids and Electrical Sleeve, he now has a slight rough change front 1st to 2nd but really not that bad at all and it improves as the Trans warms up. Another Tech has said that the Trans may of been damaged due to low fluid. This has only just happened so could now that the repair has been done may it continue to improve? Any comments would be appreciated.

Default Not a tech but that sounds viable...

I Have no idea, it was not off road although they did have some fun in the Snow a couple of weeks back. Could of been a rock I suppose I have not heard of a Trans splitting before.

Rock in the snow; seems like it'd have to be something like that. Glad I have a Rasta skid plate over the tranny!

As robust or un robust as they might be, they do not self heal. If there was damage from running low on fluid, the symptom will not go away.

Somebody has posted the Ford Rapture metal pan is a replacement for serious off-road.

I didn't know the Raptor uses a ZF transmission. Maybe this pan will be cheaper, easier to source and have the same capacity as the LR3's...? Need data. Need to make sure it fits too with my aforementioned skid plate!

I don't know of the validity of the Ford Raptor or its toughness, but the BMW X5 is a garunteed fit.

As for the OP concern, I would start with a reset of the shift adaptations. Its common for these to run low and the computer add adaptive values to compensate, then when it has full pressure, the adaptive values are too high and it makes it feel rough. Also, I hope while they were doing all of that, they replaced the Mechatronics Adapater, also known as the "Double D" seal.

I've always been told not to do software updates or reset adaptons on a trans with more than 100k.

but I did both on a sport yesterday with 170k mikes and seems to be fine.

I've heard the most critical part after resetting adaptations is to follow the instructions on how to drive to get the transmission to "relearn." If you just go in and reset the adaptations and don't follow the 55-10mph coast x 5 routine, you're likely to have issues. Doing it for the sake of doing it without any reason is also asking for trouble (at least, very little chance of any benefit).

To the OP, it really depends how long it was driven with low fluid. A split pan could mean low fluid very quickly. I would reset the adaptations, follow the relearn routine, and pray.
