I feel like that's the key to maintaining any older vehicle, keeping a mental list of what's happening and what stage of deterioration it's in.
Gee, such a ray of sunshine....

I'm not saying your wrong or anything, just that it sounds so bad!

Just wait until you start mod'ing it for heavy off-road work. Then you'll get into all sorts of fun. Bwahahaha...

Well *knock on wood* I've had what's supposed to be one of the least reliable vehicles in history, a first model year '99 Disco II that I bought used from some sketchy individuals 500 miles away for $3,500 for 8 years now and I've never been stranded. Never.

I've done lots of work, but that's my point - just know what's going on and when you get a chance, tinker with it and replace things before they completely fail. If you listen well, have good diagnostics, and reference other failures on the forums, you will only replace things that WILL fail eventually but you can stay one step ahead.

I don't even really put much $$ into that thing at all, it's been really great.

The LR3 is even better, but I know I have a small driveline vibration, front differential is on the way out in the next 10-20k miles probably (based on NVH and fluid color/smell, past experience with RRS) the suspension leaks when it's very cold (valve block probably) and I have ~20-30% reduced performance from the air compressor. Rear brakes have another 5k on them, the coolant level sensor crapped out on me (again, same as RRS).

Drives perfectly fine and is a dream, but I just keep a rolling mental list. You don't want to hear the DII list though - same thing though, overall functionality isn't impacted, just stuff to keep in mind.

So my point to the OP was to build up this mental list and listen to the vehicle ASAP so you know how to "plan a long and prosperous future together" haha.

Oh you're right on the money (and I do the same thing) but I think Don was referring to this: "stage of deterioration..."

Yes, not trying to complain about your post, I just found that particular wording funny.

I have these on my Discovery II and I agree, they're amazing! I was almost upset at how easily my disco drove circles around the LR3 in the snow last winter (even with 3 amigos and no TC haha). LR3 has some crappy 50% Nittos on it that I got her with. Looking to go cooper zeon with the stock 19" HSEs soon.
