Sounds like one of the bearings on a idler/pulley wheels rather than a spring on one of the tensioners. I would start my journey by looking at the bearings on the idler pulley/wheels and on both tensioners.

Update here -

I took it for a spin this morning to run errands. When I got back I smelt antifreeze.

Uh oh.

Opened it up and the reservoir was dry and there was most of the liquid on the engine and around the pulleys etc.

So - I remember last time my belt squeezed and it was because of a leaking hose. This now makes sense.

However, I am still getting a lot of noise.

Two questions:

1) Can the water pump "go" and spread antifreeze everywhere? Where does it leak?
2) Where is the pump? Is it drivers side?

Anything else?

1. The water pump can leak and the fan could blow it everywhere I guess. I would be looking at a hose as a more likely culprit.

2. the water pump is directly down from the thermostat housing center mass of the motor

OK this has me slightly more concerned.

I was poking around and noticed while idling (and trying to figure out what is leaking noticed that liquid (darker liquid - def. not coolant and I don't think oil) was leaking from here:

You'll hear the clattering. You can also see when I shine the light on it the drops of water coming out.

And this is what is was like after 2 mins of idle:

There is def. something going on with the whatever is behind this pulley/wheel.

I also noticed the dark liquid kept spraying my white oil filter:

And my expansion tank looks dark even though there's only water in there right now:

Ok so if that is the tensioner on the driver's side. It is possible for the bearing to fail and the pulley can angle cutting through the timing cover. Pull the belt loose and see if that pulley wobbles than check behind it

No - I think it's leaking from the pulley on the water pump - my first video shown above shows water spitting out from behind - this is what I am assuming. I am also assuming it's the pulley for the water pump...

Certainly sounds like a very bad water pump. Easy to check with belt removal. In fact, you may be able to move it by hand with the belt tension on there. And besides having to remove the fan shroud and fan they are very easy to replace as little else has to come out. I still have my factory pump and while I do not care at all for AC Delco parts, it seems to be the pump of choice for replacement and its not expensive at about $50 USD. So that will be the pump I go with.

Edit: Certainly go with the above advice, especially considering the dark liquid which you need to determine if its oil ASAP. (check oil level)

Thanks AR and DT.

Why would it be a dark liquid? This is what concerns me. Although it doesn't smell like oil...

What if it is oil?

Why would it be a dark colour?

If a pulley is off it will wear the belt down on the edge creating a black power. Combined with coolant... black liquid mess. So it could be that.
