Thanks.

As I need to get this back on the road as soon as I can, I think I'll replace the pump and the belts. Tempted to do the pulleys and the tensioner, but I just don't want to spend that right now.

Have you any advice for getting the fan off?

To get the belt off...first drink heavily....

if you have taken the fan off before it should be easier. Otherwise a second set of hands will be needed. One to hold the water pump in place and another to try and break the nut free. If you can find a long metal tube to use as a lever you might be able to do it easier.

if you have air and air hammer you can hit the wrench attached to the nut even better.

Also remember it is reverse threaded so it’s “Righty Loosey” in this case.

thanks! (I think).

Is this a two tool job? (ie. one tool to old the nuts on the clutch, the other to remove the actual nut on the fan?

^ Thats my preferred setup. Most fan tools come as a set.

Could also have a transmission cooler leak so that oil is getting into coolant

Well that was an adventure.

I ended up removing the fan clutch in a way that was unorthodox. Let's just say the drill and saw came in handy. New fan on the way.

After that, I drained the engine (yes, I know I should have done it first, but I wanted to make sure I could get the fan clutch off first.).

Either there wasn't much in there to begin with, or there's just not much in there period. Anyway, it's been drained.

Belts are being replaced, so removed. Removed fan bracket, on to water pump. The pulley on the water pump moved laterally before I took it off, so felt pretty sure that's the issue - and why it was spraying black stuff. I think the bearing in the water pump actually became exposed and grease combined with belt wear (ie. it was off camber) started to blacken the engine.

Here's what it looked like after pulling. As you can see there's quite a bit of "muck" . Please let me know what you think that is. I don't believe it to be oil as the drained coolant didn't exhibit any oil.

Here's the old one -

Since I have the fan clutch off and system drained, I am replacing the thermostat, expansion tank and a few other main hoses. Some of them were done before, so I'm leaving those for now. Tensioners are getting new pulleys.

I am contemplating removing/replacing the alternator since it's easy to get to and the belt is already off.
