Default New Cross Climate 2 Tires and Gas mileage better than sticker

My last two sets of tires were the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Zero 255/55/R They were a good road tire and not bad for occasional off-road. Not very good in ice/slush/snow I never got stuck but stopping on snow was a weak area. The new Michellin CC2 tires are a true all weather that somehow avoids wearing out early. The Zeros last around 30,000 miles and you loose all of the tiny sipes way before 30k.

The CC2s are designed to keep all sipes all the way down to 3/32" and suppose to last 60,000 miles. They outperformed half of the true snow tires on snow and did well on dry and wet in the summer. Sounded like the perfect tire for those that don't want to swap tires each winter. While they are XL 111 load rated they seem a bit softer that the Zeros, the side wall maybe a little more flex vs the zero. Driving I did not notice a WOW new tires, they do seem to track better on highway sections where there are groves that can make tires want to hunt. I see they now have a cc2 SUV version, wondering if that would be even better than the XL version on heavy LR3s.

The only complaint I heard was it kills gas mileage. I just drove it 4 hours on the highway and it averaged 20.4 mph the best I got with the stiffer Pirrelli was 21 mph. So for people wondering they don't seem to kill mpg on the LR3 and mine is 100k miles original plugs, no tune ups.

What I don't get is the sticker on LR3s was 14/17 city/hwy Do you guys get better hwy miles than the epa sticker? Just wondering why I get 20.4 when it should only get 17 on the highway. Are the stickers wrong? Do you guys get better than 17 mpg on the highway with V8 HSE?

I never base milage on one trip. If I did I could say my LR3 gets 30mpg because it did when I was traveling across the US with a strong tail wind. With that said, I do get above sticker. I budget my trips for 18mpg highway but can get 19/20 fairly easily if I try. Around town 14/15 is about my average. And this is with all terrain tires that are much larger and roof rack. My milage averages were a touch higher before the upgrades.

Agree, this was a two way trip and only like a 1/2 tank but I've done it in the past with the other tires and while its a smaller window I don't see it dropping on the highway unless im in huge winds or going uphill one way. My conditions were less than optimal hills and traveling both ways on the same stretch of highway. 70 mph. Around town its like 15.4 mpg ave for me. I would think EPA uses best case more controlled conditions.

I did not see a 10 percent reduction with the cc2 which some people were wondering about. I'm thinking those tires might hurt mpg on smaller 4cyl cars and not so much with heavy V8s.

Thanks for the info I was wondering what most LR3s get on the highway (No tail winds)

I have Yokohama Geolandar G015 AT. I jokingly call them “mall terrain” tires because they are very lightweight for the AT category. They are perfect for our needs which is mostly highway and a modest amount of forest road.

After 8k miles on them, I’ve determined that 19 mpg highway is about the floor for my setup. 20/21 mpg is most common, and I’ve gotten as high as 25 mpg. I think the worst I’ve done highway was 17mpg, but that included three very long mountain pass climbs at highway speeds. Speed limits in the northwest are generally 60-65 mph, with a few areas of 70 mph. I have noticed that the LR3 gets slightly better fuel economy at 70 mph than 65 mph.

Great to hear others experience with alternative tire choices!

Those tires look pretty agressive for "Mall" tires
If did less snow and more off road I would get those, look much better for off road than the Pirelli and get good MPG on the highway. Are they loud?

I find them to be very quiet. No complaints from my wife, either. Biggest selling point to me was the low weight (better mpg) and they are 3PMS rated so I can get through winter tire checkpoints in the mountain passes with no fanfare.
