Default Not Good - Engine Knock and Loud Chatter

I have a 2005 lr3 with about 126k on the odometer. I was driving and stated getting a loud chatter from the engine. No knock at idle. Parked it and turned it off for a few hours. Came back and had a clatter on start up but went away after a second or two. It revved and drove fine. Then later on the interstate, the loud chatter came back and now I have a knocking sound when idling. Plenty of oil, 93 octaine gas.

My guesses are
-oil sump is dying
-crank bearing (maybe a stretch)
-defective oil filter
-worn out camshaft lobe?
-VVT?

Any technical information or troubleshooting info would be greatly appreciated!
(Towing it to a shop tomorrow)

P.s. Knocking and chattering only happens when the engine is warm.

Check to eliminate any of the pumps, power steering, water etc.

When running check the belts and routing, if you see serious vibration in belt or wobbling on pulleys that might help to eliminate areas.

Check for codes, pull spark plugs and check those.

Sorry guys. Haven't been able to get back on for a little while.
I towed it to my shop and I'm pretty sure its a rod knock...
Currently looking for a new engine. I wonder if I could put the 4.2L supercharged RangeRover engine in.
Its the same block, just thicker sleeves and stronger internal components. Any thoughts?

Sorry, happened to me as well. Disappointing on a supposedly bulletproof engine. Was able to find a used engine and set me back about $10k all in.

I didn't realize the 4.2 supercharged was an option until after I had it done, but I'm kicking myself now for not looking into it. I have a feeling it would work alright with just some minor hurdles to overcome since it was used in the RRS (essentially the same truck). The only thing that might be a bit messy is the ECU. You'd probably need a transplant from a 4.2 RRS and not sure if there would be any issues with that. Doesn't hurt to look into it! Let us know what you find.

Also, let us know if you chase down the cause of death for the existing engine. Mine blew a hole in the block so it was kind of a mess.

In my opinion the SC is not an option. You would need the ECU and that would not work as there are approx 10 other ECUs that are all mated to the engine ECU.

To work you would basically need to transplant all of the ECUs

But aren't those 10 other ECUs essentially the same since the Range Rover Sport Supercharged is an LR3 underneath? There might be a few minor differences, but I can't see needing to replace all of them unless they are all tied to the VIN or something like that.

Ha! Figures. No way the dealer could update the VIN in the 4.2 donor ECU?
