O2 Sensor vs Cats
#21
I would agree on the off-road experience.
Just a quick update.
Drove to and from work twice today (about 7 miles round trip) 14 miles. I would say it is running a little rougher each trip.
Any thoughts on how resetting the adaptive memory on the pcm would improve driving for a few days?
Will see how things continue over the next few days.
Thanks

Yeah...it's too broad symptomatically, to prescribe a solution here. You should really have a GAP tool so that you can check things in real-time. This could be a spark plug/coil thing, dirty MAF thing, dirty T/B thing...or maybe you just need to run a BG treatment to clean out the internals.

I'm not sure. I don't know what you mean by "the gap" not being an issue. What gap? I think that resetting the adaptations sort of just "clears" what the ECUs think is happening, until it registers the same conditions that cause the faults in the first place, maybe....idk. You have physical issues...you can feel rough idling and other stuff (misfires? I forget) as well as having a CEL activated. I don't really know that resetting adaptations is going to help you. If I had to do things in order, it would be this:
1. Buy a GAP Tool ($500, but adds value if you decide to sell it).
2. Clean the TB and MAF sensor ($0).
3. Do a full BG treatment and get new plugs (? $1500 maybe).
I'm not a mechanic, I'm just throwing things out there....from decades of ownership.

So the LR3 eventually went back to running badly. We reset the adaptive memory on the pcm again and is running good again. I am sure it will soon go back to its bad self, about 20 miles.
My mechanic is recommending replacing the mas airflow sensor. Assuming that I am going to do that, does anyone have experience with using parts from places like auto zone etc. $275 vs $90.
Thanks in advance.

If the MAF is defective it will throw a code, usually. The vehicle is fitted with a Denso sensor. You can get an OEM Denso MAF for about $80 new. Toyota part number is 22204-22010 for the V8. Not gonna lie, I bought a cheap one for about $20 on eBay. Likely its a knock-off but its been working fine for 2 years or more.
