Seems we've come far enough that we don't really need to install a set of switches in the passenger cabin anymore... a controller mounted in the engine compartment mated to a smartphone app should be possible and there are some out there. But I'm really interested in experience with these systems...

There's some decent physical button options, but I'm curious about what people are using that doesn't involve the firewall and DOES involve a smartphone/tablet.

What are y'all using as a light controller w/ smartphone app? Pros/Cons?

There are wireless/bluetooth options for switching lights etc, i prefer hard wiring.

 

I am guessing that this device is connected via blue tooth or WiFi direct? I have the GMRS and Ham radio and cell phone booster in my rover and my phone is attached to the car for hands free, so there is already a lot of RF floating around. This would then be making a second blue tooth connection. I see cell phone battery consumption as an issue (I know you can just plug it in and have it charging). other than that I would wonder how good of a connection could be made if the unit is placed in the engine bay. Other than that it may make setup easier, but may not be a reliable as wires. Time will tell.

Your post seem to indicate that you have already accepted the technology just wondering if someone else has proceeded you in the endeavor. Looks like you may be the first. Let us know how it turns out.

Not really the answer you are looking for but for something like this I'd prefer a wired connection. I love tech but this is one of the handful of things that a wired connection is probably going to be better. If you want to minimize the hole from engine bay to cabin sPOD is probably your best bet.
