Default Oil Filter Cover?

Evening Everyone,

Sorry for the second post tonight, just got a lot of questions bouncing around and not quite sure where to ask them without spawning a dozen threads… so I’ll turn this into a discussion.

Fairly new to owning my LR3, had the oil changed on lunch the other day and was inspecting the fender wells and I noticed that I didn’t have a cover over the space where the oil filter was.. I genuinely didn’t know if I had one to begin with.. as much as this has become an apparent project truck.. i can’t imagine that it did.

So with that Discovery… all I can find online is a 500$ 3mil thick steel plate cover… I’ve got thicker scrap steel laying around I can cut down and polish but I figure if they’re simple enough to locate I can save some time for working on other parts of the truck. Would anyone know where to locate this cover / cowl? Or have an extra one laying around?

I’m debating on slapping a push bar on it for a winch and what not… but I don’t think it would go that low.. just really don’t want to catch a rock and have a real David and Goliath situation going on if you catch my drift.

I know a snorkel is in my future just not sure when… maybe sooner rather than later if all these storms keep coming through…

What are your thoughts on the soft underbelly of the LR3?

Missing this plate?

There are two underbody plates from factory. That little one there and a much larger one which is a bit heavier too. Neither are required, but I would not hit the trails without them.

I think so? It would go over the gap that has the oil cooler and filter; between the front of the bumper assembly and the skid plate that is below the front axel..? I typed those exact things into eBay and could not locate that listing… though truthfully if thats all it is… I am going to likely just cut some scrap steel out that will be 10 times as durable.. I have the larger one for sure.

Thank you!

Yes, that is the one. And yes, you could make something. They also sell after market skid plates which are even more annoying heavy and make oil changes a living hell. lol

Speaking of the oil changes and I know it’s a little too late right now since I just had it changed but would you change the gaskets on the oil cooler at the same time or is that something you’ve had to do? I’ve got it wiped up because it was either left a dang mess under there or I’ve got oil coming from elsewhere… maybe where the oil cooler bolts onto the front of the short block?

I forgot I had pictures… hang on.

Gap where I was wondering about the skid plate…

leaky gaskets?

I have not changed mine yet, but there is a $10 oil cooler gasket that does leak. Look like the number 8. Pretty each to change, I just keep forgetting to do mine when I do an oil change. Two bolts and unplug a couple sensors I think.

I was debating on whether or not I could clamp the hoses and just top up with some oil after pulling it off..
