So I was hearing this strange noise from my '06. Like a "clatter" but not real loud. I convinced myself that it was a road noise effect because the surface was strange (like concrete with gravel on top) and shrugged it off. So yesterday I hear it again and I'm like 'WTF?' After letting the engine cool, I checked the oil on a hunch. BONE DRY! Strange because there has not been any sign of such issues. No mess from leaks, no spots on my driveway, no white smoke, no burnt oil smell. NADA.

Any ideas?

4.4L; 198k miles on the clock

 

My 165k uses about 1-2 quarts an oil change interval.

Have you checked your PCV system? Any oil in the throttle body?

 

I have not checked either....I'll have to do that. I know of the PCV Valve being a potential oil entry point for burning; but I've seen no smoke. Is there a way to check the valve itself? Like...will it be oily if faulty? What would oil in the TB indicate?

 

oil in the throttle body usually indicates its coming in through the pcv. No idea on how to test the pcv.

Mine doesn't smoke either oil just disappears like magic
