Default Post Sale

(found more receipts)

Hi all,

Just wanted to share some additional financial info here - some costs of ownership that might be of interest.

I didn't include my auto insurance.

I sold my LR3 (sad, but momentarily necessary; it was my second car), and while I was in the process, I decided to tally up all my costs incurred from registration to maintenance to unexpected (user error) repairs, below is the list of work done. Nothing was catastrophic. These jobs were for routine maintenance, aging parts and typical issues seen for the age of my truck (according to my guys), as well as some paranoia ("what's that sound?!") or idiotic usage (always activating the EPB) on my part.

I don't regret one second of owning the LR3, and will buy one again in a few years, but I thought this info might help would-be buyers on their research.

Before I begin, I need to say that I always took it to my inde shop; so, my figures are going to be on the high end.

(I don't have a garage or the space to tinker.)

My budget for costs was around $450/month. I am in Denver, CO.

5/30/13 97170 Used Auto Inspection $88.00

3/22/14 114768 Trans sleeve $1,128.00
6/1/14 Registration $300.00
7/18/14 118140 Check Engine Light (loose air intake ) $111.00
7/19/14 118777 New Tires $884.00
8/16/14 118940 Alignment $80.00
9/29/14 121514 Scheduled Maintenance and Hood Struts $263.00

7/15/15 126706 Road Trip Safety Inspection $66.00
8/28/15 128029 Nail in tire, rear sway bar bushings, scheduled maintenance $443.00

Subtotal Costs - $9,689.51

Fuel - $2,800.00
Total Costs - $12,489.51
About $446.05/month

If you can do your own repairs, which most of the folks who talked to me do, share what your costs look like.

Thanks to everyone who helped me enjoy the truck more with their input and experiences.

I'll be back.

Looking forward to a return

I have an excel document somewhere with my ownership costs. Yikes! It was hefty but did involve purchasing a lot of tools and paying for LR expertise when I first started working on it.

Will edit and post a version soon

Where do you account for the initial cost of the car? It should- at least- be a separate line in the equation- yes?

$1200 for brakes. Man, these things are definitely not affordable if you don't own tools.

I just did my fronts. I got the parts at worldpac. Rotors(coated) were $82 for both and ceramic pads were $36.

hi markmontana,

i intentionally did not include initial cost of truck. that's a line item that would be different by significant details for everyone. someone may have gotten a used, mall-mom special, but at a premium; another may have inherited a badly abused machine. one person may have paid cash in full; another may be financing.

i met a trust funder who paid nothing; it was a nice gift from mom and dad. at least one of his costs was a big fat zero!

hi abran,

so very true! i'd add that it's also better to have some place to do the work in, too!

Hi Rovernoob,

Most of the time I'm in my driveway lying on my back doing repairs.

It amazes me how expensive it is to take one of these rovers to have it serviced at a shop.

I definitely could not afford the ownership cost if I wasn't doing the maintenance myself .
