Default Rear tailgate - Bottom latch stuck

Hello all,

I know most people have issues with their upper tailgate breaking and getting stuck. My top gate is working great however, the lower gate does not function. I’m hoping it’s just the button that needs to be replaced. The button has no pressure and seams to be broken. Anyone have any knowledge or experience to share on what might be wrong? Or what I should look at?

The button is electric so it will not give any feedback of no pressure.

There are electronic actuators inside the tailgate that release each side. The switch gives them the signal to release. Since both are not working it may be the switch. Not a very expensive part and can be found on ebay. Set of screwdrivers, socket set and some patients it is an easy fix.

I’ve had my eye on a button from eBay for a few days. It’s cheap enough that if this doesn’t fix the problem. Small loss. I’ll try replacing it.

If you press the button and nothing happens, no actuator sound, its the switch OR fuse - the fuses do go from time to time on those. If you can hear the actuator work, but it does not open, then its the actuator itself. The cable end broke. Somewhat repairable actually. If you have to pop the lower gate you can put a screwdriver in each end of the catch from the inside and pop it free.

The switch literally does nothing. No movement at all, no sounds, nada. I’ve been open the gate with the two hook latches on the inside. Pretty easy to release with my fingers.

I went ahead and bought a used switch from eBay. I opened up the lower tailgate and removed the subwoofer to find the original switch was completely broken. Someone had clearly been in this tailgate before. The vapor shield is missing and visible tampering of parts. I installed the new, used button and everything is working great now!

Original Rome. Switch.
