Default Rubber mat or protection for tailgate carpet?

Has anyone seen or done this? I have the rubber cargo mat in my '07 LR3 and its great, but as I drag stuff in and out of the back, I'm really messing up the carpet on the tailgate. I was thinking of finding a piece of rubber, similar to the cargo mat and cutting it to fit. Then maybe glueing or mounting with strong Velcro just on top of the carpet...

Default canvas roll or similar

I think what is normally done is a suitable sized piece of heavy canvas that tucks under the main mat and sort of is unrolled as required. It is a bit longer than the lower tail gate is high so that it drops down over the upper edge.

Also it is practical as it can be dragged upwards when the door is closed to protect the tailgate carpet etc from the load inside.

The roll piece also protects that flap that covers the depression where the door hinges are and that is the problem if you try to install a fixed carpet protector - that the flap also needs protection but has to remain sort of flat.

...I just use an old blanket when I'm loading stuff that might mess the tailgate up. Nothing permanently fixed.
