Smoke and water coming out of the exhaust! PCV or something else?
Hey!!
So I picked up my LR3 from a local shop a couple of days ago (it sat at the shop for about two weeks while they waited for parts) and when I started it a lot of white smoke came out of the exhaust pipe. It was definitely white with possibly a light blue tint but it was hard to tell. It went away after about 30 seconds and didn’t come back on the way home (about 5miles). I let it sit for about 20 minutes and it was smoking again then went away again… I drove it around the neighborhood and it seemed fine at first then I heard a clicking sound from under the car and a huge billow of white smoke came out of the back then went away… it happened once more than I took it home. On a side note… I could see straight up water spraying out of the exhaust… more than seemed normal and my brother said he thought he could hear a gargling sound when it happened.
I did a bunch of research and thought it sounded exactly like a PCV valve. I had a Bad head gasket in my discovery 2 a few years ago and it doesn’t have any of the same symptoms… the smoke has a faint smell like hot plastic but not coolant, the coolant level hasn’t changed, no overheating, the oil is a little low but looks perfectly fine, and no strange sounds other than that clicking sound before the smoke came out on the test drive.
I replaced the PCV today and it seems like it’s running better but it is still smoking. I haven’t driven it yet because it freaked me out but it was running for about 20 minutes… Do I need to burn it out? Is this normal after replacing the PCV? I watched a YouTube video of a guy saying to check the throttlebody for oil puddles… I could see oil but I couldn’t really see any puddles.
I checked for codes with my new iid tool (because that’s the only thing I know how to do with it
) and I got a couple of codes…
P0170-00 (AA) fuel trim (bank 1)
P0171-00 (AA) too lean (bank 1)
I just cleaned my MAP sensor yesterday and I replaced all of my O2 sensors last year. I cleared the codes and they came back a few minutes later. Do you think these codes are related?
Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!
Pete

Update for anybody with the same issues… I haven’t figured out the water thing but I changed the PCV valve and yes it takes a few days for the smoke to clear up. As far as the codes… I only get them when it smokes. I cleared the codes, started the engine, saw a small cloud and my check engine light flipped on after about a minute. Then I let it run for a couple minutes and cleared the codes again. I drove about 10 miles and the check engine light stayed off the whole time. Today I started it and I saw a little bit of smoke and the light turned back on. I cleared it again, drove it about 15 miles and it hasn’t come back yet.
