Default Sun roof tracks/housing assembly

Need some advice on this one. Took a 700 mile trip to the coast with the family. Dogs in back and pulling a rented U-Haul trailer to house our luggage. Good news is the truck performed great! Love that it’s a do everything vehicle.

bad news is, I caught a rock or something at 50 mph with an open sunroof and it shattered the entire glass. It was literally raining glass down on us. Luckily, everyone was alright but was a long trip home without sun roof glass.

Anyway, I had the glass replaced under insurance on Saturday. But the tech advised that I do not open due to cracks in the tracks and a few plastic bits he found loose. So looks like I need to replace the housing and it looks like it comes in one complete unit. I’m thinking this could have happened from the original incident since without the glass there isn’t much support for the mechanism when open. An autobody shop was able to get it closed before heading home. But not sure how much trouble they had doing it. I want to go back to insurance and insist they cover the cost of the complete housing replacement. Am I off base here?

Depends on where these cracks actually are. It is common to have cracks in some places up there in the sunroof assembly area, I think - and I'm going way back - on the little arms that connect to the glass. It's unsightly but functionally it's a Nothing Burger. As for the loose plastic, maybe fish it out, figure out where it's supposed to go and re-attach it, if possible.
