Swingaway tire carrier triggering backup sensors?
When I bought my car one of the front sensors in the bumper was dead. GAP tool said inner one on drivers side. I have now replaced it and no longer get the chime and flashing light in the switch. All good except as soon as I put the car in reverse I get a very loud steady tone. Very annoying so I turn off the system. Is this likely due to my swingaway tire carrier with a 275/65/18 mounted on it? Kind of defeats the usefulness of the backup sensor. Can I turn it off with GAP?
Get some self adhesive clear round furniture protectors from a hardware store and cover the offending sensors, i fitted them to the inner sensors as my aftermarket raised tow hitch was setting them off.
If you cover it up isn't it still going to alarm?
Nope, did mine over 6 years ago and never had the beeping since. Outers still work so i haven't hit anything yet.
I have seen some say that their carriers do not interfere with the parking sensor. BUT they still do.
Both times I have installed a spare tire carrier, they did not play well with the rear parking sensors. I tried the method here and it stopped the noise from the sensor when the Frontrunner spare tire carrier was installed on the 2007. After a while I just removed the parking aid option from the CCF to shut them up. The second time was when I installed a Tactical 4x4 bumper with the dual fuel/water can carrier and I ordered it with no sensor openings. The last step in that install was changing the CCF to remove the rear parking aid. I now I have spare sensors for the other LR3 / LR4's in my stable that don't have spare tire carriers
I tried the advice given here and it works. Well actually it doesn't "work" it just keeps the sensor from making noise. One advantage of doing it this way is you should be able to keep the other 2 or 3 sensors so you have some protection on the middle and the left side when backing up, as opposed to my method where you lose all sides.
Regardless of which approach you take, a good rear camera is alway a good thing to have.
Hope this helps

I found that electrical tape or a small round piece of rubber from a tire tube worked best. I tried a small plastic disk and it seemed to be "too reflective" for the sensor. Again, I found it best to deactivate the sensors and live with that fact that I cannot use them when the spare tire carrier is on.
That is why I added a rear camera.
