Timing Set recomendations
I have a 2008 LR3 with something north of 200k miles that has that dreaded rattle at startup and a "Crankshaft/Camshaft position correlation error on bank 1". So, im looking at VVT and/or timing chain and sprocket replacement. (Error code means emissions test failure, so have to do something).
My question is 2 fold:
First, how can I determine which part (VVT or Timing chain) is the culprit (with the additional follow-on of "both")?
Second, any recommendations on a parts kit for either. Atlantic British has a nice looking timing set for only $1500 and ebay has a super expensive one that costs over $104! I don't really want to spend $1500 on a 15 year old car with 200k miles, nor do I trust the $100 one from ebay, So, recommendations?
At this point, the crank pulley is the only thing in the way of removing the front cover and I do have the special timing tools, so have to get parts on order to get mobile again!
Thanks in advance,
- B

I'll also ask (while I'm here), suggestions on removing the crank pulley bolt. I hit it with the big air ratchet in reverse mode, but it just laughed at me. I don't really want to pay ridiculous prices for the crankshaft holding tool since I have not been able to find a reasonably priced one (they are all $100-$300. I have not yet tried the ratchet strap to the frame trick or the rope in cylinder 1tricks, but any advice on that would be appreciated.
thanks

This Dewalt worked for me easily. I did buy the holder though for the install torque. There is a pdf at the beginning of my replacement thread that was extremely helpful in determining the VVT phaser failure.
I have about 20k miles on the job I did on my 2007. It is a daily driver for my daughter and still starts and runs perfect!

When you say you are using an air rachet do you really mean a rachet? They do not have much torque compared to a full size impact gun, either electric or pneumatic. You can get battery powered impact guns from Dewalt and Milwaukee with up to 900 foot pond of torque. Maybe you can rent one.
I'd gone through your very detailed and enlightening post several times, including the later analysis of the part of the phaser that fails, but did not see the earlier pdf - I'll go back and re-read to go through that pdf.
Your post was a bit of an inspiration for me to do the job.
All those pictures really made it easy to see what was going one - I've used it for other front-end projects in fact.
Thanks for that original thread and of course your follow-up.

trust me, the thick harmonic balancer socket transfers the force to the bolt. It’s amazing. Buy it, I guarantee it will free the bolt. I’m serious.
