Default "Transmission Fault- limited gears available"

That's what the LR3 had to say this morning when I started her up. This is the second time in three weeks she's done that, both times it was inspired by me throwing her into reverse. Any ideas? This particular time it also through on the check engine light. When I turn her off and back on tranny fault is gone and no issues w limited gears. Car runs and drives normally.

Historically, I did have issues with some sort of cable once upon a time and the car was slipping from drive into neutral. My Indy re-adjusted that and it's been fine since. My tranny isn't the smoothest shifting these days...130k and the low gears don't slip but they do jerk a bit...especially in the morning cold. It definitely gets better as the car warms. Can't seem to get the answer I'm looking for on that one unfortunately.

But back to the tranny fault; any idea of things to check out? Could it be electrical? A harness? Something with selector lever cable?

I'm assuming you put your foot on the brake pedal to switch to reverse, maybe the brake light switch that so often goes bad?

What condition is your battery in? A marginal battery can start the car, but cause all sorts of issues, usually CAN Bus related.

Battery is three weeks old. Brake light switch is what I saw suggested on here in one particular case but there was no follow up from the poster so I didn't know if it resolved the issue. I installed one about 50k miles ago. Couldn't hurt to throw in another.

Brake light switch ...any other suggestions?

Best bet might be reading the code when the warning message comes up. Mine briefly gives a similar message and when I plug the hawkeye into it I suggests a communication error with the gauge cluster. My error goes away without even restarting the car though.

I had a similar condition that was diagnosed as a t-case control module re-cal. May not be quite the same though, of course. I didn't get the CEL

I would definitely be looking at the battery & brake light switch first as well. I had similar issues when my battery was borderline.

I own a 2008 LR3. Recently I had an issue where I had this pop up on the message center, "Transmission fault limited gears available". And a "F" popped up where it usually says what gear I'm in. I checked out YouTube and watched several videos. One of which said to check the stop light switch. I did, $40. Then I connected to a code reader that said I had misfires in practically every cylinder. So I bought new sparkplugs, $135. Put them in and it's been 2 days, then today as I fired it up my amazement the issue was gone... Needless to say I'm estatic! Just go through the obvious signs before taking it to the shop. Trust your abilities to wrench on your vehicle. If your like me and have wrenched on all your vehicles then handle your business. It will save you a lot of money...

$135 for spark plugs? Hell, I bought the best of the best and don't think I spent that much!
