Default transmission fault limp mode lr3

New to the forum. I've got a 2005 Lr3 4.0 SE 68,000 miles. The other day I was driving, and it went into limp mode. Saying transmission fault. No other lights. When able I pulled over and shut the car off. Started again and everything seemed fine, for about 35 miles. Then it did it again. Once again I did the same and it went away. Just trying to get home I continued where it did it once more. No other indications. No lights no noises. The next morning looking over everything I had no idea where to begin. Took a little drive and noticed the trans seemed to surge slightly between 3rd and 4th gear. Almost like it isn't sure which gear it should select. I have no messages at the time, and I'm waiting for my scanner to pull codes. Anyone have any ideas. I'm stationed in Puerto Rico, about 2 hours from a dealer. Looking at the trans there is no sign of any leaking or issues. I've followed wires, checked connectors, everything I can think of. I should have the codes by the end of the week. Side note if you swap to manual shifting there seems to be no surge. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hmmm....not sure. Only Tranny faults I ever had were due to a bad Transfer Case Control Module or the connection thereto...but you really need to wait for the fault codes. You might try a hard reset...search the forum on how to do it, but in a nutshell you remove the battery cables and connect them together with a run of wire (or I'd use jumper cables) for like 2 minutes.

Well pulling codes, I have one P0729. Sixth gear expected gear ratio is incorrect. Any thoughts?

No clue. I would do a pan change and new fluid, have the adaptive values reset, and cross your fingers. If it isn't that then you're looking at something bad.

Best you might try right now is what houm_wa suggested above. Hard reset, if you had a gap tool that could reflash the tranny firmware to the ECU I would try that and clear all codes.

Note the OP has the 4.0 - I don't know if it has the same tranny as the V8s (?)

I also wonder if it could be overheating. If it got hot again after 35 miles I would expect it to go back into limp home mode. Might have leaked fluid or have low fluid etc.

Good call. With all the 'sealed' transmissions these days most people have never actually checked the level in one.
