Transmission slipping intermittently
Hello all,
I have a 2006 LR3 V8 SE with 200k miles on it and try to keep it well maintained. The only transmission problems in the past have been reluctance to shift up out of 4th or 5th gear but replacing the transmission fluid fixed that.
Now I have an issue where the transmission slips out of gear when I am braking. And by slips out of gear, I mean the D indicator disappears from the dash and my rpms go to idle as I am braking . Yesterday morning was particularly bad: If I came to a full stop, nine times out of ten the D indicator reappeared on the dash and the rpms dipped low as the transmission re-engages. If I braked and then removed my foot from the brake to speed up again, it would sometimes go back into drive but sometimes not, causing the engine to rev. Shifting into sports mode would put it into drive; however, if I left it in sports mode and braked, I got a transmission fault on the display. I managed to get a couple videos of the dash - one coming to a complete stop, the other braking then accelerating where the engine just revs, both of which I'll include in this post.
What's strange is this only happens intermittently, and I think (and I may be the crazy one here) it relates to rainy weather. It seems every time the transmission slips are bad, we had showers overnight. Yesterday was a particularly bad day - showers the night before, and I had the problem the entire 20 miles to work. But the drive home that evening and this morning- nothing, drove perfectly. When it slips, it slips all the time (yesterday morning), then will be fine thereafter.
The weather thing could be all crazy coincidence but I've had it in the shop twice now and each time they haven't been able to reproduce the problem. So any help would be greatly appreciated! Recent maintenance includes replacement of 3 ignition coils and one injector. No codes or faults occur with the transmission slips except when it does it in sports mode. Ignore the dead gas gauge in the videos - need to get the sending unit replaced.

Interesting....seems like your tach shows your RPMs at idle even as you are decelerating from around 50MPH. I'm not sure if that's the tranny slipping out of gear (and into N) or if it's some kind of throttle position sensor issue. Have you pulled any codes? Have any faults appeared to clue you in on the root cause?
I'd start by looking at the transfer case module between the battery and the firewall. It'll be the first module you'll see once you pull the battery out. Remove the the wire bulkheads and look for corrosion inside the block and also down in the module. Any corrosion here is a sign of water intrusion. Get it dried out and cleaned up to see if your symptoms clear up. If its bad enough, there could be corrosion inside the module.
200k? Ever had any transmission maintenance or work done? That would be a long time on the original shift solenoids if so. All kinds of strange shifting issues can come from bad solenoids. As previously said, fault codes will steer you in the right direction.

Sounds like the transmission linkage may need lubrication, start there. Passenger side and forward corner of the trans pan (on US models). Locate linkage and bomb area with silicone lubricate. (google search for images of linkage to help). See if that does anything. If not then it may need adjustment. This was the issue I had, even turning a corner hard would cause it to drop into neutral but no really neutral.

I'm curious what maintenance service you have done to your tranny in the past. I have enquired about servicing the transmission at my dealer several times and they won't touch LR transmissions unless there is an issue. I'm at approx 140000 miles on my LR3 with no fluid change/service.

I'd be changing fluid and filter if you want it to last.
