Hey Guys!
I have installed the 2.5 inch lift kit from Johnson rods and it looks great and drives perfectly now i am getting to the next level which is the tires. I wanted to keep my 19“ wheels and go with the Goodyear wrangler adventure AT 255/65r19 which are 32” tires but when i went and asked the dealership they told me that installing larger tires may effect the gearbox so now i am in a state of wtf why?
its a 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4 V8, so i wanted to ask u guys is it true, does it effect the gearbox? or are they talking Nonsense. My off-roading is usually in the desert so sand. Any info would be great.

I'd worry more about the rods . . . Not that tire size.

You may get fewer mpg, but no gearbox problems.
Just also get a matching spare. Running 1 smaller tire with 3 larger WOULD be an issue.

 

Re the gearbox question, the drivetrain is designed for factory size tires, so yes, larger tires mean your gearing will be different. That means somewhat less power and since your rotating mass (and tread agressiveness usually) increases also, lower mpg. But tons of people including me, run larger tires and the difference, while noticeable, isn't usually a big deal.

 

I'd agree. It's noticeable on the day-to-day stuff, on-road stuff. Off-road it's noticeable the other direction. While a little more torque at the point of attack is helpful, having the bigger shoes is a good tradeoff.

For me, it's most noticeable when I take off my 32" mud tires and put on my stock-sized winter tires. It's like I forget how different it is until I make the swap. The 2" difference is not a big deal though, really.
