Opening up this discussion again. Picked up an extremely cheap additional LR3 just before Christmas, have been gradually getting it back into proper condition.

Most important repair still required is start-up rattle. It's significant. Sounds like a diesel excavator. Quite embarrassing. Lasta for about 3-4 seconds, so definitely on the 'bad' side of the scale, for this issue. Engine extremely smooth and quiet after this initial startup rattle. Engine definitely not looked after properly by previous owner. But it was so cheap, that I was happy buying it just for spares for my other LR3.

Anyway, some initial research suggests I need VVT stuff. I'm clueless. Pretty sure I also have leaking valve covers gaskets, so I definitely want to replace everything that is sensible to replace, while I've got it stripped down. Never done this sort of repair before, don't have the tools or the knowledge, but definitely able to learn - I do most maintenance myself.

It's an 08 V8 4.4, with 150,000

Thanks, Simon

This might help: https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...cement-111381/

I've done this job in the supercharged Jaguar variant of the AJV8 and the hardest part was removing the AC and power steering bracket which in a Jaguar of the period is required to remove the front timing cover (I am not sure if this design flaw extends to the Land Rover). You will need special tools to get the crank bolt and pulley off as well as the Jaguar/LR timing tools to hold the cams in place. All these tools are available on eBay for good prices.

The workshop manual probably has aspects of this job documented. You can also search on JaguarForums regarding the timing chain fitting process (the LR3 engine and the X350 engines are very similar), and there's a youtube video ("The Clay Way" is the name of the user, something like that) that shows how the LR timing chains go in place.

Looking at your signature line, the good news is it's getting warmer so you can at least grab a brat and a beer on the lake at the Union when you need a break from the repair. Go big red!

My '06 does this. I'm not handy enough to attempt this one (plus no space, no lift, insufficient tools and no patience) but from what I can tell it really won't hurt anything...just your ears.
