So I've been trying to figure why I has a soaked passenger carpet.
I thought it was the nipple behind the CJB. To test I dumped a whole bunch of water into the drain in the sunroof. Lo and behold the water went, as it should, out the outer fender. None in the footwell.
Well, color me surprised. No drips or anything. In case there was a slow leak I waited.
Nothing.
So then I thought I'd pour more water to test.
It started coming through the headliner and leading down the inside of the A Pillar.
Now I'm not sure if I over poured outside of the channel (the outer tray where the hole must eventually drain) but it started to come through the rivets in the change where the roof slides. (See picture , Labelled "1")
I poured water back into 2 and 3 and they drained ok and out to the fender.
So where does that leave me?
I think if it were a leak from the connection or tray the headliner would have have shown water stains. At least I think so.
Which leads me to think - what is it?
I don't think it's the Cowl as when I removed the air pollen filter it was bone dry.
Would this just be an A Pillar issue? And how can I test? And was it one pillar that was more prone?
1) Channel where I think I poured water and it leaked. Suspect that water isn't supposed to go in there. 2/3) Channel where I supposes the sunroof is supposed to drain... This is where it leaked. Seems it came through the rivets.
You may have over-poured. Keep in mind the drains are not designed for a flood of water. They are designed to direct water that happens to make it around the moonroof glass seal. So if you poured in area 1, you are pouring in the wrong area.
There are three WELL documented leak points.
- moonroof drains, there are four.
- cowl - again, well documented but easy to fix.
- Exterior a-pillar trim.
When it comes to the a-pillar trim, you probably won't see anything inside as it leaks into the a-pillar then runs down. The trim gets replaced with updated parts or you can use a kit to modify the existing. Need to be done correctly!
Yes, thats the kit. You need to remove a couple locating "pins" on the trim. I just break mine off by twisting. Feel free to add additional sealants if needed! I used Reinzol to make sure all was good.

I will pull the covers later. I'm hoping this WAS NOT already done as it will def. give me the ability to explain the water in the foot well. I know my Pillar cover is lose at the top - this from the previous owner.
Is there any way to test for this?
I don't know how long this was going on, so hard to tell if it was a slow leak over a period of time or if it just suddenly happened.
I imagine that if the A pillar is the culprit it's a slower drip that would soak the pad over time?
The a-pillar can let a lot of water in. The pads go bad and no longer seal or complete rot away. Not to mention that from day one the pins were not sealed and would let some water in. So even new LRs had leak issues right off the line. And FYI, mine was dealer corrected with the kit but they did it wrong. I know my drains were bad, that was easy to tell as you can view them easily. But I still did my cowl as a new one is only $80.
Philip I would start by checking the front right sunroof drain where in takes a 90’ turn out of the cabin. It is behind the central junction box. It is a pain to get to but it is doable. My 90 had come detached from the drain tube. Water flowed straight into the cabin into onto and underneath the carpets. I pulled mine up and stuck an empty gallon water carton under the carpet to give a chance to dry out. It took a few dry days, but all is good now. Some have suggested a hair dryer, I wouldn’t do that. You are likely to set the truck a flame. If you can pull into a garage and leave the door open it helps with ventilation. Phil
