Default Where to get a new key? (without paying the dealer)

Hello,
I tried to change the battery in my key fob (2006 LR3) and messed up one of the solders, the unlock/lock remote feature doesn't work anymore. Though it still starts the vehicle. I'm pretty sure I messed up the circuit board - any idea where to get a new key and programmed without paying 500 odd dollars at the stealership? I only have 1 key

Thanks

You can get a rebuilt key ready for cut and program from Abran here on the forum.

Then a local independent shop should be able to program it.

If you are near so cal, I can provide a remote and program it for you.

if not, you should consider buying the GAP tool and program yourself.

Second on using abran. As an alternative, If you have one working key you can program additional keys with the gap tool. You can just about pay for the gap tool by skipping the dealer.

I tried opening a key a few years ago. I wasn’t as patient as I should have been.....pushed a screwdriver across the circuit board. Key was toast. $400. Later had a new key from the dealer. Phil

Can I buy a key from you and take it somewhere to be programmed?

Yes, but find the place to program it first. Might be easier to buy a GAP tool if the place wants a lot of dough and is far away.

You can hire a locksmith to cut and program a new key.

Is getting it programmed by an auto locksmith a good deal?

I have never found a locksmith here in Houston that could cut one of the blades, much less program them. I take my proof of ownership to the dealer and buy the blank key from the parts department for around $20 and have them will cut it for free One of them charged $10 to cut it. When I bought 2 blades for 1 car from another dealer here, it was $40 and they cut both blades for free. I put the new blade on a cheep key fob I got off the internet and use the GAP Tool to program it.

That being said, there is a good chance the cheap key fob will not have a rechargeable battery and you will be doing this again on about a year or so.
