Default 2011 LR4 - catastrophic engine failure

I just got my 2011 LR4 HSE(90k miles), in December and I love it. I was convinced she was invincible. All it took was a mountainous road, a hot Arizona summer day and a 4500lb camper trailer to kill my baby. Anyone know of a repair shop that would want to take a full engine swap/rebuild in the Tucson-Phoenix area? There isn’t a vehicle I’d rather have, but I’m not even sure if it’s worth it or the actual diagnosis at this point.

I was was driving along the interstate (watching my gauges intensely) when my temperature spiked to max. I received an low coolant warning an pulled off the road. I noticed coolant pooled on the ground but no noticeable leaks coming from the radiator. After about 30-40 minutes, the engine cooled and I started it with no more warnings. I tried limping it to the next exit (3 miles down the road). This was my big mistake, because I started to hear a clank/ticking noise and received a major engine check warning. Steam was pouring off the block and I immediately pulled over to the side of the road. Local mechanic tested the cylinders this morning- no compression.

Motor is likely completely toast unfortunately. You might have been ok after the first event. But continuing to drive afterwards on a engine that is extremely sensitive to overheating was probably your undoing.

Coolant crossover pipe is your likely culprit for the coolant loss.

Thanks for the reply. I agree, from what I’ve read over the last 48 hours, these engines don’t survive an overheating event. My local European auto specialist doesn’t even want the job. He said it was going to be too much work. Not quite sure what to do now.

We sold it. We found someone with a Range Rover that had air suspension problems. They bought our LR4 with the intention of swapping in the engine from their Range Rover. Our LR4 is probably living its best life in Mexico now.
