2011 LR4 Transmission Fault
I have a 2011 LR4 (85K miles) that threw a transmission fault yesterday after switching to sport mode on the highway. I was traveling about 65 mph when I switched it sport mode and the car thudded fwd twice and trans fault light came on. I pulled it over to a rest stop within 1 mile and had a look. Immediately, I noticed a smell and proceeded to see good leak underneath the car. I thought it was tranny fluid and decided to have the car flat bedded to a local repair shop I've used before. Today the shop called and said the fault code is saying there is an issue between gears three/four. They can't fix it and want to send it to a trans shop. Most likely needs to be rebuilt according to shop. Ideas? Does it make sense to try a transmission flush with new filter/oil before going to a trans shop?
They also quoted me $1100 to fix the leak as he says it from a coolant line/box that runs to the engine. I thought that was odd as the car has not leaked coolant and has not had a problem until the transmission thud yesterday. It was leaking pretty good when I pulled over and was sure it was tranny fluid. He looked at it a second time after my questions and came back again that it was coolant. Is it possible that the trans issue caused the coolant line issue, or am I getting a run around? Again, the car has not leaked anything recently. I did have to have a new seal put on the gas tank recently. They had to drop the tank and replace the seal.
Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a coincidence. Go to the shop and ask them to show you the leak, Just tell them that you would like to confirm before spending the $1100.
Then you can test drive and check the trans. If there is actually an issue, a flush won't help.

Is the shop experienced in working on Land Rovers? Between coolant leak and a trans issue you’re in pretty substantial work and would definitely benefit from someone who isn’t doing it for the first time from Topix
