Default 2012 LR4 engine replacement

I have a 2012 LR4 26k miles. Serviced 10 wks ago at dealer coolant levels checked and full Svc. I was driving and ran in to a 1-2 hr traffic jam as I drove away the engine coolant level suddenly went to zero and the engine overheated. I shut it down straight away and went to a gas station, I let it sit for 1-2 hrs and then after filling it with coolant drove off everything seemed fine.
It then started to overheat again and fumes came from the engine it overheated and again I shut it down. They towed it to the dealer.
To cut a long story short they are now replacing the engine (thank god) under warranty.
It is shocking for a low mileage premium luxury SUV dealer serviced just 10 wks ago to have such a catastrophic issue.
The dealer was very decent about it and has given me a loaner but it's been in the shop for about 6 weeks and estimate 1 month more before it's ready.
I asked the parts guy if my engine had arrived and he said yes they had 3 or 4 arrive this month. surprised by this I asked him why so many and he mentioned the 5.0 V8 engines are failing after 3-4 yrs. If this is true this is shocking for a premium SUV.

Any similar issues from 2012 v8's??

Yes I have the same problem with my 2013. Unfortunately mine isn't under warranty. Looking for a replacement engine for it. Can't believe that engines are failing in such a luxury brand.

Is there a service manual on pdf available for the LR4? I am planning on rebuilding the engine. Haven't found many posts about anyone rebuilding one of these engines. Or where to find replacement engine parts if needed.

Default Re engine replacement

The dealer replaced my 2012 LR4 at 18300 miles under warranty. Took about 68 days to complete. They won't tell me what caused the failure. Yes, I was also very surprised.

I have heard rumors about water pump failures on Land Rovers and Jaguars as well. but I have no proof.

I am the third owner of a 2010 LR4 and the car fax showed an engine replacement at 998 miles. I called LR North America as part of my pre-buy inspection (as well as plugging in my iiDTool , so knew exactly what was going on)They did not give any details just that it was replace. At that time it had been a certified used Land Rover twice so with 72,000 on the clock and a good price tag, I did not hesitate to buy it.

Still not sure what was wrong, but they did put a new set of front lower control arms on it after the sale and before delivery.

The engines have oil flow problems. Any overheating event will cause catastrophic engine failure, based on the already poor oil circulation. There are plastic coolant lines that fail and water pumps.

I have searched for rebuild manuals on the 5.0 motors with no luck, in addition have not found anyone in the US doing the rebuilds.

Our shop has been working with a engine builder in the U.K. That specializes in the 5.0 motors. They have developed their own design for Crank Bearings that is supposed to improve the oil flow issues.

We have sold 4 of these motors thus far with 100% satisfaction.

If anyone needs a motor I have a "Fully Dressed" one from this builder in a crate. PM me for details.

Angry Engine failure 2010 LR4

Engine failed on 2010 LR4 with 136,000 mostly freeway miles. I had just spent $2,300 on new water pump, thermostat and upper coolant lines. 2 weeks later, apparently a lower coolant line failed, and engine overheated and is now blown.
The car is in very good condition otherwise, and is a model loaded with every extra upgrade imaginable in 2010. Apparently the car is worth $12-13,000 in good running condition, but it would cost more than that ($15,000+/-, including labor)) to put in a rebuilt engine. I expected at least 200,000 miles before any such issue. I have thought about buying a used engine from an auto wrecker and having it installed, but that could be risky. Also thought of a Craigs List ad for a "mechanic's special".
Any suggestions, or should I simply get rid of the car for parts, and write off the difference to a poor Land Rover choice?

Depending on condition your LR4 here in CA is closer to 15-20K.

Used motors here go for approx 8K. Labor is another 3Kish for install.

Where are you located?
