Best year LR4 and features to look for

It's not quite that simple but that's a start. I'll see.if I can keep it somewhat clear. Aside from the engine, my opinion of the major changes go as follows (some of these matter more to some then others,.there might be more that I don't note that just didn't matter to me).
2010-2013
V8
stick gear selector
All had rock crawl mode
All had two speed transfer caseFew had locking rear differential and it's kind of hard to tell
2013
Tech update. I haven't sat in a 2010-2012 but I hear their screen controls, nav, etc..., are much slower.
2014-2016
Supercharged V6Dial gear selector with paddle shiftersStandard single speed transfer caseIf it has rock crawl mode option it will also have two speed transfer case rear locker, and full sized spare.
Tech the same as 2013 but better then the 2010-2012
They pretty much all share similar known issues, control arms, crossover pipes, water pumps, etc...
The 2010-2012 seem to have had more issues with the timing chains but those should have all been swapped out by now.

It is limited to 8 years
So that would mean it applies to Model Year 2014 and later subject to the mileage limits specified
So it does apply to LR4 2014 and newer from what I understand. LR4 was produced until 2016

I have done it a few times and they are generally super helpful.
Alternatively, you could ask a dealership to lookup the VIN and tell you if it has the rear HD.

The 2013 LR4 is the last year for the V8; beyond that you lose 2 cylinders of power with SCV6 (undersized for weight). Highly recommend you get a 2013 V8; target the 2013 LR4 HSE LUX with ~100k; I have 2 of them and both spouse and I love the vision and ride. Take to your LR4 mechanic for pre-purchase inspection. Change the oil every 2.5k miles if timing chain original.... 0W-20 ONLY.

14+ did not have V8. I thought this was an eight cylinder motor issue only. The SCV6 is afflicted by this design flaw as well?

He also mentioned the same thing about oil type as the above comment...use 0w20 liquid moly top tech 6600 and change every 5k miles.

The engine is the same basic design, but the V6’s had redesigned timing chain guides and tensioners, is my understanding. The guides were the main problem - the aluminum was softer than the steel tensioner pin, and the pin would wear into the guide, causing the guide (and chain) to become slack. The redesigned guides had a steel insert where the pin contacts the rail. This also apparently changed the angle of contact, and the new tensioners have a slightly different angle of protrusion (at least based on pictures I’ve seen). I’ve heard the ratchet mechanism in the tensioners also can fail, and I don’t know if that problem was fixed, but I don’t believe that was the primary problem in the system.
I haven’t heard of any timing chain failures in the V6. Not to say it isn’t coming, but if it were much of a problem, seems like we’d be seeing more posts about it. A lot of 2014’s must be getting well over 100K miles at this point.

I've been told problem doesn't occur if change engine oil at 5k interval.
