Default Fuse 5 Blowing/Failing - Short to Ground

I’m posting for someone else’s benefit.

Last weekend my MIL came on and the vehicle went into “Reduced Performance” mode.

I pulled the following fault codes using a Gap tool: PCM-Engine Petrol
  • P001B-11 (AF) Intake (A) camshaft profile control circuit low - Bank 1 - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • P001E-11 (AF) Intake (A) camshaft profile control circuit low - Bank 2 - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • P0661-11 (2F) Intake manifold tuning valve control - circuit low - bank 1 - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • P0696-13 (2F) Fan 3 control - circuit high - General electrical failure - circuit open
  • P0695-00 (2F) Fan 3 control - circuit low
  • P0691-11 (AF) Fan 1 control - circuit low - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • P0458-11 (AF) Evaporative emission system purge control valve - circuit low - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • P0526-17 (2F) Fan speed sensor circuit - General electrical failure - circuit voltage above threshold

I thought the issue was electrical because of all the “short to ground”. I found that all of those components tied back to one fuse (Fuse 5E) and that it had blown/popped/failed. So I started tracing wires and looking for shorts or breaks in the wires, but all the wiring harnesses were in good condition.

My issue was actually the clutch inside of the “Viscous Cooling Fan” (aka: Radiator Fan). The fan is belt driven, but there’s an electronic clutch that engages the fan only when it’s needed. Somehow it failed and was pulling too many amps and blowing the fuse. Replacing the entire fan assembly (which was super easy), and obviously the fuse, fixed my issue.

If you get the same faults and symptom consider checking your fan. I couldn’t tell it was broke by spinning it by hand; and I didn’t check to see if it spun when the engine was started (so I don’t know if it was or not). But I isolated the fan by unplugging it and leaving all the other components plugged in, replacing the fuse, clearing the codes, and driving around to see if the fuse would pop again. When it didn’t, I plugged the fan back in and had the fuse pop within a few minutes.

This forum has been super helpful for me—but I didn’t find anything online with these codes, so I’m sharing for someone’s future benefit.

Mods, sorry if I put this in the wrong space.
