Gas Flange Recall Service
Hello to all the members,
I want to first thank everyone active in the forums as I have learned much from reading various posts. I am a first time Land Rover Owner. I purchased a 2012 LR HSE with HD Package 104K miles in early October 2021. I had a PPI done and the truck passed muster. I had all of the recommended 10 year services along with new spark plugs, brake lines and fluids, all done at an independent shop in October. The truck has been running smooth with no mechanical issues. I had some electronic glitches with the touch screen early on but have not had any issues since.
I learned about the Gas Flange Recall in late October 2021. I did start to smell gas fumes occasionally starting in late October, but no obvious gas leaks. I contacted local dealership in October but was informed they were waiting for repair instructions and parts from Land Rover corporate. I finally got an appointment to do the recall repair next week June 28, 2021. Hearing about all the not so good experiences of so many owners at car dealerships in general and more so with Land Rover, I'm worried that the dealership may cause collateral damage as they do the repair.
So my questions are:
1) How was your truck after the repair?
2) Was there any unexpected issues or damage found related to the gas flange leak that required additional work not covered by the recall campaign?
3) Are there any known issues related to the leak that should be checked out and addressed?
4) Will the recall repair be covered if done by an independent shop?
5) How long did the repair take? I was told by the dealership service rep that it would be a 2 hour job, so I was planning on waiting at the dealership while they did the work.
6) Was there any issues or problems that occurred after the repair job?
7) Is there anything else I should consider before having the repair done at the dealership?
Depending on your feedback, I may reschedule the repair or proceed as scheduled.
Thank you all in advance for your responses,
Luther

Funny you should ask. My local dealer - who claims to be doing 8 of these recall repairs a day right now - just did my 2013 LR4. I did have some high expectations as these guys should know these trucks inside and out, though I had only taken mine to an Indy since I bought it in fall of 2020. I called to double check they had the parts to make the repair and made the appointment- even asked if they wouldn’t mind replacing the fully corroded tank shield since they had to drop the tank anyway - no problem. Dude was super nice and said they would do it for free as I had the replacement part already but had been waiting to put it on til it was up on a lift. A also better to have these guys do it since dropping the tank is a giant pain.
Dropped off the truck and got a call later that day it was ready to pick up. Picked up, drove about 5 miles toward home - stopped at the gas station becuase they prefer the tank to be nearly empty for the repair as it makes it easier to drop the tank. Started filling up and immediately fuel spilled down all over under the car! So clearly something wasn’t right. At this point it was too late to call the dealer so I emailed them and left the truck (I was a bit freaked out and didn’t want to drive unnecessarily) the next morning the dealer called first thing. We talked it over and while I would have preference if they would have come to pick it up, I figured anything that was wrong hadn’t affected the 5 miles I’d driven and it was likely fine to drive it back.
dropped it off and they took it straight back to the shop (ahead of the like of RRSs and LR4s that had arrived already that day) - turns out when the put the tank in place the neck seal (?) had somehow folded and so incoming fuel spilled out. I don’t understand exactly how there wasn’t a warning light or something as it seem the system should have lost vacuum if that’s the case, but I would ask people who know more about how this particular fuel system works.
bottom line - the dealer f’d up the service and my truck initially came back to me worse than it was - but they made a very good effort to correct it even though I was not a (paying) customer and did me a favor by installing a part that was not purchased through the dealer.
this is in line with other dealer experiences I have had on my other cars when you have any service done that is not super common and simple. I am definitely hoping this doesn’t wake the dragon and cause other issues but I have driven about 8-10 hours since then and so far so good.
good luck!
