what failed with the original engine? crossover tubes? timing chain?
crossovers failed, overheated severely (102 degree day in Houston TX on the freeway. Couldn’t shut it off for close to a minute or it would’ve been a severe wreck.
2nd owner, 2012 LR4 5.0L HSE - bought it with 82,330 miles and have put just under 1,000 miles on it in a month.
Bought it for $9500 and have put in $6800 in repairs (see below), but now she drives like a dream... Hoping she'll give me 20,000 miles without any trouble...

timing chain and tensioners done by Land Rover at 100k
Basic maintenance performed
Around 177k front crossover failed and engine slightly overheated
previous owner replaced crossover and all drove fine with the exception of a valve cover leak.
Done by myself-
180k
swapped all fluids
new valve cover gaskets
spark plugs
coil packs
injector seals
front crossover
pcv’s
front and rear brakes and rotors
battery
Sway bar bushings
210k - loud knocking in control arms
Front upper and lower control arms
220k - passenger side air shock leaking
new front air shocks
new hitachi compressor (didn’t feel like retrofitting new style)
current - very small leak from water pump. This next problem is intermittent, but If I get too excited when accelerating I go into restricted performance. Pulling a code for the fan clutch. I have a new fan clutch with blades, and a water pump with gaskets ready to go. I plan to replace the rear crossover as it has NEVER been replaced, as well as the rear upper and lower control arms and rear air shocks. I may
throw in new break lines and the new style transmission pan and filter. These vehicles are amazing, when running.
2nd owner, 2012 LR4 5.0L HSE with rear locking diff - bought it in October 2021 with 104K miles and have put in just over 21K trouble free miles on it.
Bought it for $14K and did the 10yr 150K service on it plus brake fluid change and new spark plugs. Doing oil change and tire rotations every 6K miles.
New Battery at 116K
MAP Sensor change at 121K
Love the LR4! It's my DD
Barring any accidents, I will plan on keeping it until I can no longer drive!
That sounds expensive to do all that LR 15 - 116 000 miles no big issues so far - until this small engine oil smear they saw when they did the oil change
I am looking for a mechanic to change the timing cover gasket here in southern california - do you happen to be in SOcal?
The dealer wants 4800
thx
sherman oaks exclusive auto is top notch work and about 25% less than dealership (still not cheap!)
