Finally getting after replacing front lower control arms and rear upper control arms on my 2013 LR4. Got the front lower control arm out on the driver's side without having to cut anything out. However, the inner CV joint separated during the process. I didn't realize there was nothing retaining the inner CV joint! Both boots are still in tact. Any suggestions for getting the inner CV joint back in place? I haven't removed the axle nut (yet) and the axle appears to be seated completely on the diff side.

you can feel it thru the boot , make surethe joint is lined up correctly and push the rotor brake hub assembly in while you have the lower arm still out it will be fine as long as boot isnt damaged

 

Tried doing this and tore the inner boot. It seems I have two options at this point: 1) boot kit or 2) new half shaft. Neither sound fun and both seem to require a **** ton of LR specialized tools. I am leaning towards boot kit since I would rather be able to take the boots on and off and inspect, grease, and reassemble CVs if needed. I also have not had any problems with any boots or axles up to this point. I also dread dealing with pulling the axle out of the diff and dealing with the seal. My 20113 has 137k miles on it. Is it foolish to replace the boots on axles this old?

 

I’m sure if they are cared for, you could see 250,000 on the axles. Of course, that’s by replacing the boot ;-)

 

The axels have a long life, they are not generally a common wear or fail item on these Rovers. I would do the axel seal, it is incredibly easy to do with the shaft out and costs less than $20 USD for a new one. Just make sure you get a new seal that comes with a protective insert - looks like a red plastic bit - it gets removed after the shaft is inserted but not yet seated. To remove the shaft I suggest the ratchet strap method. Tie/secure to the CV base and get it tight and secured to something that is pretty much straight out from the shaft. Another car's wheel comes in handy.... Then some prying will usually cause it to pop right out with easy. Overall they are not difficult to swap and you dont really need any special tools. Look at some video online, they will help with the rebuild process.
