Default LR4 Under Carriage

I’m looking at buying an LR4 to replace my ‘98 Discovery. I noticed something on the under carrot that I haven’t seen before.

Can anyone tell me what I have circled in the attached pic is and what that white hook is?

Well what is all that hardware further right? Running boards?

Good question. I was focused on what stuck out like a sore thumb. It does have running boards on it (see pic). I’d thought they were the stock ones. That hardware looks more extensive than what I’d expect for the stock running boards though.

. I have the same question.
Which leads to my biggest complaint; there is all kinds of interesting technology integrated into these vehicles. And unlike Jaguar, very little factory issued documentation available describing the technology. Another example, the two hunks of swinging cast iron behind the rear wheels.
With Jaguar I have the Technical Overview manuals, Up to date Workshop Manuals, Technical Training manuals, and numerous other factory issued documents that describe to the smallest connector or engineering decision for the design of the body, engine or frame. For all my vehicles.

Incidentally, these cast aluminium parts were not connected to my (now removed) running boards.

Cheers All

The running board hardware is much more extensive in the LR4 2014-2016 vs the LR3. I don't know what the hardware is like in the LR4 2010-2013.

My LR4 has the same "aluminum tubes" that were exposed after I removed the running boards. My guess is they are for extra support from a side impact.

The hook may have been left from when the vehicle came over by ship. I've heard they strap them down while in transport.

As for the weights in the rear, they help to reduce vibration in the frame for a smoother ride.

white hook is a red herring. The aluminimum bits are spacers or whatever. Best thing to do with those running boards is to remove and sell on ebay. They will lead to rusted out sills. Worthless POS. Yes, the weights at the rear are harmonic dampeners.

The LR4 manual is available for download - for what it's worth. It's not great and it assumes a lot of pre-existing knowledge and availability of specialist tools.

Looks like a nice vehicle. Check the mileage and check the coolant crossover pipes (front and rear) have been done or do them once you take possession. It's a real issue. Lots of work but a doable DIY if you're feeling brave. Excellent 'how to' guide on YT by a fellow member. Good luck.

@pagoda I know you're right of course... but it does not negate the need for actual LR available documentation. The Technical Workshop Manual is not as descriptive as my XKR or XR or S-Type R workshop manuals.
Incidentally, you cannot download the entire manual as a pdf... or not as I have found on Topix. And my time is too precious to do it any other way.
Cheers.

I would not want the entire manual as a single PDF, for search ability reasons and I often attach workshop files to the forum posts here. So having just the pertinent section to post is better. But I do have the LR4 workshop files as a single PDF, and I hate it because searching a single massive PDF can produce irrelevant results.

As for the weights, this is exactly what they are for:

@pagoda thanks. Mileage is 101,000. Unfortunately I’ll need to keep some kind of step for my kids. Luckily in southern CA rust isn’t really an issue. I’d most likely ditch these for a better set though judging by the installation.

Thanks for the heads up on the cross over tubes. I’ve done a head gasket replacement on my D1. So, hopefully I can handle it.

:-) To each their own. My bookmarked and indexed (Table of contents) pdfs in books.app works just fine.
Nonetheless, yes those guys on LRTime are awesome... If I only had a lift at home...

Cheers!
