Default LR4 Winter Tire - Studded or not

Hi

I live in Calgary in Canada and have a 2011 LR4. I'm in need of some new tires and will be getting winter ones as the snow will coming in a few months. I've narrowed it down to the Nokian hakkapeliitta r2 or the 8 (studded), can anyone give me some advice on whether to go studded or not? Is it worth the extra money considering the traction control systems etc?

I live in the foothills in Maine, so I see pretty regular snow/ice sleet...
I run the snows in my signature, they are not studded and perform great.
I am not sure why but I remember something about not running studded tires on a heavy 4x4 that would be driven at highway speeds... I'm not sure where I heard that from, not even sure if it's true...

They will help on ICE, otherwise there is no advantage. Also the possible disadvantage might be that you have to remove them in some places in the spring, as they damage pavement. So if you drive on ice a lot, they might be worthwhile.

As Jaguardoc indicates, should there should be pretty good performance generally though.

Never thought of studs as they are illegal on the roads in Illinois. Never have had problems in any amount of snow and it isn't always the length of time for the snow but the amount of snow. All my Rovers have been excellent on/off road as long as I have good tires. Before Rovers my wife drove a Triumph GT6 in snow storms and that was the only car I put on winter tires. I went thru the snow in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee last February with new All Terrain Continentals and was right there with the National Guard HumVees.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I'm going to go non studded, seems like the logical option and sounds like studded are very loud as well!

I just pulled the trigger on the Nokian WRG3 SUV. They are Nokians winter rated all season/weather. Good luck with the HAKKA R, seriously the best snow tire available. IMHO

Thanks Papa, I hear they're great too - will likely use them for the spring and summer. I bought the R2 and think they're going to be a great choice, I'll keep everyone update over the winter. Let me know how they are!
