Hi All, coming over from the Disco2 side. Decided I need some more pain but with something newer.
Looking at a 2015 with 100k miles. Can’t find any service records that are showing timing chains have been replaced.
my local British mechanic sends all of these jobs to another local mechanic. They gave me a quote for $4,600 for timing chain, tensioner, guides etc. valve cover gaskets. Does that sound like the cost for getting this done?

It is a significant job. Chains, sprockets, guides…. that price is not unreasonable.
Are you certain the job needs done now? Is that noise the chains or just the noisy high pressure fuel pump?
Vehicles that have had frequent oil changes have not necessarily seen a need for these component changes.

Hi Guy. Thanks for the reply. No im not sure it needs to be done at this time. Trying to buy remotely which I hate doing. Wasn’t sure if it’s ok to wait for noise or have to get done at this mileage.
Talked with the shop doing some work on the AC and asked for their observations on oil leaks and specifically timing chain noises. They replied no noises or visible leaks.
I have an Auto inspector looking at the truck today to go through it thoroughly. Would be great if I could drive for a while before having to do such an expensive repair.

Truth be known, I have purchased many JLR vehicles this way. Though I demanded a full inspection at the dealer and the report. prior to the purchase (including the service history as it is easily sourced from a dealer).
At 100k, don’t cheap out; I would replace ALL fluids, filters, and confirm the last known date of the changes of all coolant hoses.
Moreover, don’t be surprised if the control arms (the integrated bushings, actually) require replacing.
Also, the generator (“alternator”, in American) are known to give up the ghost by that mileage.
Also, Be sure to have it on the hoist, run it in gear, and listen to diffs, ptu and transmission for any unhappy sound. Though know that these sounds are often mitigated by a fluid change.

Wanted to update and thank you all again for the help and advice. Happy to say that I’m really enjoying my first new to me vehicle in about 15 years. Have to say WHAT A NICE RIDE! Love all the improvements of the LR4.
Had LR shop look over the Truck the other day. No oil leaks (surprising), Everything seemed to check out.
Engine oil looks to just have been done. Probably will change just so I know when to start clock. Was planning to refresh the diffs and transfer case if they look like they haven’t been done. I’m a little weary on the transmission service. On the D2 as soon as I replaced the fluid and filter it started leaking soon after and had to rebuild (bad luck maybe?).
The LR4 transmission service mileage is 160K. Anything I should know ? Thought I read in the forums that a normal drain and filter change only replaces about 50% of the fluid ? is that true? Maybe that’s not a bad thing.
