I would go ahead and service the transmission now. My experience is with the ZF 6 speed, not the 8. But generally people on this forum start to see issues beyond 120k mi. Servicing my transmission did not induce any leaks or new issues.

Congratulations @04disco2va !
Yes, we here all agree… what a ride. And in all weather and road and off-road conditions.
But as you should expect, many previous owners did not keep up on the elevated maintenance required of such vehicle.
(In a previous life, in the army, we drove everything hard… but they were meticulously maintained).

That suggested maintenance schedule are for those vehicles in pristine environments whose exercise involves trips to the shopping mall or ball field and, the occasional trip camping in a groomed park. Good call getting all the fluids and filters done now!

They are known to be susceptible to rusting. (especially those running boards…. so I got rid of mine).
I get an annual “lanolin type” based respray every fall. (with the only product that meets Canadian army standards: (https://corrosionfree.com/wp-content...-Text-copy.pdf). What I haven’t done yet is get under there with some kind of rust converter…. one of these days…

I grew up in a time where we lifted the hood every weekend to confirm the good health of the vehicle. (and my father being an Italian and a car nut enforced this behavior). This is a habit I maintain to this day. The moment something goes off…. deal with it.

Time for me to head out and hopefully avoid some “Pennsylvania pinstripes” (heard that phrase on a youtube video and love it) in the great outdoors.

Cheers!

Thanks Guy. Looks like we have something in common with the Italian car crazy Father! Know what you mean lifting the hood regularly. With my OCD I’m under the D2 that often just to make sure! Thanks for the heads up on the running boards will have to take a look. Not familiar with ‘Pennsylvania Pinstripes’. Have took that one up.

thanks again for the reply.

Had LR shop look over the Truck the other day. No oil leaks (surprising), Everything seemed to check out.

Engine oil looks to just have been done. Probably will change just so I know when to start clock. Was planning to refresh the diffs and transfer case if they look like they haven’t been done. I’m a little weary on the transmission service. On the D2 as soon as I replaced the fluid and filter it started leaking soon after and had to rebuild (bad luck maybe?).
The LR4 transmission service mileage is 160K. Anything I should know ? Thought I read in the forums that a normal drain and filter change only replaces about 50% of the fluid ? is that true? Maybe that’s not a bad thing.

thanks again for the help and advice.

Nice lr4!

To get a full fluid change on the zf trans the dealer has a machine that hooks up hoses and flushes and fills. Cost is about 800 dollars. Or.... do it yourself for 200 dollars or less.

Also in the v6 engines you shouldn't have to worry about timing chains. The cooling system is what needs looking after. Especially the hard lines under the super charger. Parts not to expensive but it's labor intensive.

Front suspension needs replacing around 100k. Easy to do yourself and not too pricey. Some people don't bother. It's clunky over rough roads.
