Adding a second battery put no additional strain on your alternator, just give the extra capacity to draw from.

 

What isolator do those of you with Dual batteries recommend to prevent the constant charge/discharge from occurring?

 

The winter 2008 Overland Journal did a fairly extensive comparison of dual battery charging systems.
There are a lot of ways to connect them, including just connecting in parallel, but depending on what your needs are, that won't work.

 

I have always run in parallel, for the extra combined amps that my winch can draw on a hard pull. It has alway worked well for me and saved me a fair amount of money in the process.
What will you be using dual batteries for?

 

(Planning Stage - No truck yet) My goal is to be able to add more accessories to the truck, but all my previous research (mostly for car audio) had warned against wiring them in parallel due to the forever charging issues. So my question was more academic vs. realistic than an actual approach at this time.

Hopefully next week it will move from planning to design as I should be buying this weekend.

 

Nothing wrong with running them in parallel as long as you are always aware of the fact that they are. In other words, it would really suck if you're in the middle of nowhere and don't have enough oomph left to crank your engine to get them recharged, or get home. Even more critical if you have an autobox and can't do a rolling start like you can with a manual.

 

Don't throw rocks at me, but I have a different approach for high amp battery packs. I run two six volt batteries (the biggest I could find) in series. This setup is in my snow plow rig. I have 2x 1000CCA and with the jump to 12volts that gives me 4000CCA

That statement, was posted last year, and I have since made a couple of inquiries and must agree with your findings. Actually I have since sent 3 or 4 people to Sears for either the PM1 34 series or the PM1 31 series, so back off a little.
