I am jealous of your trip already! 
I ran the first couple of legs of the WABDR (up to Ellensburg) over 5 days of leisurely driving and camping. Most of the roads are non-technical and maybe just a little rutted in those sections. You gain and lose elevation a few times.
This was the uphill side which wasn't too bad. A lot of big rocks, so pretty bumpy and slow going. The downhill part was the same and was one of the only times I needed to use low 4 to assist braking the engine.
My Rover performed very well. One of my buddies who drove it for a couple stretches commented on how he felt the Rover did better off road than on the the highway.
There are some more technical parts of the WABDR, but overall I believe it is pretty easy and your truck will likely do fine.
I took two jerry cans with me for piece of mind, but we never needed them.

I'm slowly trying to build up my Disco for overland travels, so the rack was a logical step. It's already got a lift and good tires. Next things on my list are a front bumper and a set of drawers in the back (those are almost done)

It'll get used soon enough, I assure you. Actually, it's already brought home a 10-foot chunk of military sand track.

Basically, it is PSP. I didn't know the correct term for it, I've heard it called a lot of things. It's basically like a steel sand ladder.
I cut them to length (so they would fit across the front section of my roof rack, over the sunroof), then cut off all the little feet that were on it. Ground it all down, and getting ready to have it powder coated this weekend. They will be the same color as a set of Maxtrax, so they're easy to find in the dirt and mud.
