Just bought a used Safari roof rack for the rover. Metal is in good shape but has some rusting in some areas. I plan on recoating it. I am going to wire wheel the entire thing. That's where the advice comes in. I can't decide if I want to apply a flat DTM paint, plasti dip, get it powdercoated or take it to rhino line place and have it rhino lined. Recommendations? The rack is not going to take a ton of abuse. I'll just be using it for camping and outdoor trips. Thanks.

 

I am also considering doing the same, but am looking for the lightest finished product. Thinking of just painting it flat black Hammer Paint....

 

Not a bad idea. Everything I've tried to paint with the hammer paint doesn't end up looking right and always tends to flake quickly...

 

well, rust i know something about.....finally.

visually i like the flat black high heat rustoleum, but....

imo there's nothing better than the kbs (or por15, ive heard at twice the price) for hardcore treating and refinishing. i don't think kbs has a flat black yet but i've experimented a little with spraying the high heat on top. not sure of the long term results but looks great.

 

If you are planning on wire wheeling the entire rack, get a portable bead blaster instead. Will do the job much faster. If you are just doing the rust spots, then wire wheel away.

 

Oh no. Just the rust on the mounts and welds.

You might consider using Rustoleum's Professional paint instead of their standard paint, it is a much better paint and holds up a lot better.

 

Like Mike said, go with the Rust Oleum Professionals Paint. Huge cans, not too expensive. I used it on my steel wheels, so far so good

 

Looks like I'm going to try the Rustoleum's Professional paint or Serwin Williams DTM for now.

 

Make sure the paint is at room temp. Adheres mucho bettero.
