Default 21" vs. 22" wheels/tires?

Hi everyone-

I'm new to this forum and have been really grateful for all the info on the Disco V thread. I have had a 2011 LR4 for 7 years now and I'm looking at the 2018 Disco V, but I'm unsure about the wheel sizes and capabilities. I do more light offroading than really heavy offroading (a fire road type terrain mostly- with maybe a bit more of a rocky road or mountain pass type terrain here in CO) and I'm really unsure on whether I should stick with a 21" wheel/tire or if there's not much difference in "inability" of anything above a 20" wheel to handle offroad terrain? There's one HSE Lux at the local dealership that they're going to offer a great deal on- but it has 22" wheels. There's also an HSE with 21" wheels for about the same price as the Lux... Or do I just save up and get some 20" wheels/tires down the road?

Would definitely appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.

thanks everyone-
dave

I'd suggest you look at what tires you want and check whether they are available in the 22 and/or 21 inch. If available in the 22 then I'd say you're probably ok with them. Doesn't sound like you need a massive sidewall or tons or rubber for the sort of driving your describing. If not then you will want the 21s
Note that you can get a set of 21 inch takeoffs (brand new) on eBay for about $1500. So I'd say get the vehicle you want and it's easy to downsize the wheels. Plus you could have the 22s with road tires and the 21s with something for more off road grip if you want

Pinch flats are a problem on these heavier SUVs. We even ruined a 45 series tire on our quite a bit lighter Q5 and, since the tires were 1/2 used up, no one would shave a new one that much to match so . . . had to prematurely buy a set of new tires [ca-ching]. I personally would never put 40s on a Disco or Truck/SUV period but that's me. Unfortunately, the 275/45/21s and 275/40/22s are both outrageously priced. 275/45/22s are actually cheaper than 275/40s or 275/45/21s.

Ideally? If I had to have bigger than 20s, I would get 22s and put 275/45s on them at 31.7" with some good street tires like Pirelli Asimmetricos or Michelin Premier LTXs and put some 275/55/20 M&S rated AT tires on a set of cheaper 20s for winter and off roading. On my Pepper, I ran 275/45/20 Pirelli summer tires with 255/60/18 Terra Grappler ATs for winter and the mountains. I loved that setup.

If I ever get to town to order it [been sick for 2 weeks], I'm just going to order our Disco with 20s and start with a set of 275/55/20 Conti ATs and see how well they perform as a daily driver? Just run them all year if they behave and wear OK on the highway and we'll already be set for out here at the farm and when we go to the mountains? Plus these LRs look bada$$ with ATs on them IMO.

Default 22" wheel with 285/45R22?

has anyone experimented with (or have any thoughts on) the 45 instead of 40 for the OEM 285/40/R22 wheels/tires? If I bump up to the 45, would I need a lift?

There seem to be some pretty ok options for this size if you bump up to a 45 from a 40?

22s from a RRS fit perfectly with 275 / 45 R22 on the D5. I am loving the look. Only a few hundred miles on them so far and the ride is only slightly more harsh than the 55s that came stock. I am going to re purpose the 20s that came on it with winters. Still working out TPMS issue however
