Default Upgrade Discovery 2 Wheels and Tires

Hello D2 forum

Have a 2003 D2 and a few more months remaining on the tires. Taking this opportunity to upgrade the wheels and tires to have a nicer look on the vehicle.

Questions:
1. Currently have 255/55/18 tires and 18" D2 factory wheels. Should I stick with 18" to keep the ride?
2. I've been told that increasing wheel size will result in a stiffer ride? Why is that? If I upgrade to 255/55/20 doesn't the profile height remain the same and therefore preserves the current ride?
3. What is the largest wheel or rim size I should consider? I'm asking here because most of the folks in this forum are real experts on Land Rovers. FYI, a wheel store told me not to go over 20"....
4. Any suggestions for wheel brands which have good quality and reasonable price?

Thank you

Al

If you look around a craigslist you can find newer 20" rims off of other land rovers, LR3, LR4 and Range Rovers. Good quality rims you will need to add hub centric rings to fit them properly along with newer style lug nuts.

Ride shouldn't be any better or worse as long as you stay with the same profile tire. I kicked it around and found some great deals on the 20" rims, in the end I found a better deal on some All-Terrian tires in 18"

Increasing wheel size will result in a stiffer, but more predictable ride. You won't really get tire roll with 20" wheels, but you'll feel every bump that much more. Plus, Discos don't look that great with large wheels like that.

I've fitted RRS wheels with 255 50 R19 tires. These OEM wheels and tires came very cheap, £500 for 5# LR RRS new wheels with Goodyear F1 Eagle tires fitted. They were removed 'cos some punter wanted to fit some flashy wheels on his new RRS and I bought them from the main dealer for half the price of a new set of tires only which were needed. I sold my stock wheels for £200 with worn tires but had to buy concentric rings and new lug nuts and then sold the old lug nuts for £50. Allround it was a worthwhile switch, BUT, the ride is harder but handling is improved a bit at the cost of more road noise. I now have new Continental UHP all year tires for a very good deal on them. Goodyear F1 Eagles were the best tires I've ever used for tarmac driving in the D2 but they wear out quite fast.

I disagree, I think the newer 20" LR OEM rims look really good on a street driven DII

18" or 20" for looks, it's your money. But your math could cause problems in question 2.

255/55/18 has a overall diameter of 29.04" and the 255/55/20 will have a overall diameter of 31.04". The 2" gain can give you clearance issues.

Closer fit in a 20" would be 245/50/20 with an overall diameter of 29.6" OR 255/45/20 which is the same.

You can safely clear 31.5 without any issues, or at least I can on stock suspension.

Hi ArmyRover

Where did you get the 31.5" figure above? Assuming this is accurate then it means the 255/55/20 is the maximum wheel and tire size I can fit on my '03 D2 to preserve the ride?

Thanks

Al

I run 265/65/18 on stock suspension DII. Which if memory serves is a 31.59" tire. No rubbing in the last 2000 miles that they have been installed.

Default Upgrade wheels for Discovery 2

I am finding it's tough to get aftermarket wheels for the Discovery 2. The bolt pattern for our vehicles is 5 x 120 and there is a limited offering for wheels with that bolt pattern.

Does anyone know what the wheel offset for the Discovery 2 is? I've been told a range from 32 to 35mm. Is this correct?

I'm going for more of a hybrid off-road/street look (combination black/silver and rivet 3-piece look) and cannot find anything worth buying. Do you have any recommendations of wheel dealers with a good selection?

Thank you

Al
