Completed the repair of the expansion chamber. It’s pretty obvious why the next year they chose to add a ballast air tank. (Where I am unsure.)
It took me hours, but that’s mostly because the initial tools were not adequate. I had to dig through my toolbox for more and then find some tools that I had used and set aside, etc..
The things that surprised me, the pictures, although helpful, especially in showing how to load the rivets; were not 100% clear!
Although it is mentioned with the words ‘inner housing’; I was surprised taking apart the housing after drooling out all the rivets that there was another smaller, almost identical housing!
I actually counted over rivets and the rivet holes in the larger outer housing to make sure that the replacement part came with enough rivets. (It had exactly enough, so make sure you understand how to use the rivet gun as there are no spares.)
None of these posts were clear that Land Rover recommends you get new 8mm voss connectors (LR041295) and a new air line connectors. (LR083989) The air line connector is plastic & easily damaged. It is a double female connector for 8mm compressed air line M12x1 screw connection. The Voss connectors are metal & need a 14mm open end wrench. The middle of the plastic airline connector fits a 10 mm wrench, but it is not recommended as it is easily damaged. The video with no dialogue shows a preference for a pair of pliers. I used a small pair of vice grips to make sure I could grip the status part next to the where the brass connector screws in, but not so tight to damage it it is sturdier than the smaller 10 mm center. That was how I was able to reuse the airline connector, but since it is outside of the suspension air compressor housing, I may just order one to have on hand in case reusing the old one fails. The new expansion chamber came with one new Boss connector and I did not remove the one that was on the air line (That connects to the expansion chamber inside the housing.) so it did not need to be replaced. I did clean the o-rings on the reused connector & bought o-ring lubricant Jesus on the old O-rings on the re-used voss connector and the new one on the expansion chamber. I tested everything before I put both housings back together.
The photographic example of this repair does not clearly show a part of the trim that covers the sides of the tray to be removed which covers the air compressor housing & unit; is cut away because it is not entirely removable or at least I did not find out how so I used my drill to remove a section above the T-40 torx screw/washer that kept the side pieces in place. (I basically marked on the plastic with a knife and drilled several holes close together and then used a knife to cut that piece out. It would’ve been better to remove it, had I known how.
The gentlemen who made the photographs of myself had third row HSE luxury Discovery’s.
The person who made the non-speaking video did not have third row seating so his plastic cover over the side piece was easily popped out with a screwdriver.
So if you have a 2017 Land Rover Discovery L462, (You may want to order this part to have on hand because quite frankly I think just going over deep pothole that was underwater made it pop.) Before I found that I had already ordered a replacement compressor as well as a valve block because some older discoveries have had issues with those, but as I tested everything before I reassembled the housing my compressor was fine. (Luckily both are returnable since I bought them from Amazon and sometimes eBay is returnable too as long as you don’t use them.) The nice thing about Amazon and eBay is you can buy insurance for these parts. Mine I had bought from a local British auto parts store so they did not offer it, but I chose that because they shipped the fastest. Everyone online would’ve taken an extra week give or take. (NOTE: I don’t know if it’s because of the shutdown or poorly trained mail carriers, but my male carrier had a hard time finding the correct office and it took an extra two days after the day it was supposed to be delivered, but I did finally get it.) so consider shipping methods when ordering, especially during this continued US Government shut down.
Damaged expansion chamber the slight separation of the plastic is where it blew out.
