Decisions...decisions.....
Thank you for your service ar077.
PenFed might stand behind their products but you'd still be limited by the contract you agree to.
I'm not sure if it is $2995 because that's for Premium Vehicles. I'm sure the D5 would fall into that category but it isn't listed as one of them.
So if your transmission fails, all they have to do is say it was caused by the fluid, or a fluid leak, and thus isn't covered.
If your engine overheats because your thermostat is bad, or you have a coolant leak, it's not covered.
If your D5 weighs over 2000 pounds, it's not covered (I think they really mean 1 ton capacity, but that's not what the contract says).
If you take your D5 off road (even if the failure isn't due to being off road), it isn't covered.
If you have a leak of any kind, it isn't covered and neither is the damage the leak causes.
Then, there were a lot of other things not covered including electrical, body, interior:ITEMS NOT COVERED: Any normal maintenance item including tires, wheels, struts, shocks, brake shoes or pads,
rotors or drums, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, lubricants, clutch, pressure plate or clutch release bearing and tune-up
items. Exhaust or emission parts, sound reproduction components, collision avoidance, lane departure warning system
and safety restraint systems, lighting, wiring harness, telephone, clock, television and navigation equipment. Any body
parts, interior parts, trim, glass, paint, air bag system and keyless entry/anti-theft.
And then, if you ever get them to pay for a repair, they can install used parts, and they don't pay for diagnostic charges, taxes, fluids, and shop charges:
At the option of the Administrator, failed parts may be replaced with new, like kind or good quality remanufactured,
rebuilt, used, or after-market parts.
Exclusions:
1. VEHICLES OVER ONE TON OR WITH “BRANDED” TITLES DO NOT QUALIFY FOR THIS COVERAGE.
2. ANY LOSS CAUSED BY COLLISION, VANDALISM, NEGLECT, ABUSE, FIRE, THEFT, FLOOD, CONTAMINATION, FLUID INTERMIX,
SLUDGE, CORROSION, MISUSE, ACTS OF GOD, INCORRECT INSTALLATION, IMPROPER REPAIRS TECHNICIAN NEGLIGENCE OR
THE FAILURE TO PROTECT FROM FURTHER DAMAGE.
3. ANY LOSS CAUSED BY OVERHEATING, FREEZING OR THE LACK OF ANY NECESSARY OR PROPER AMOUNTS OF LUBRICANTS OR
COOLANTS.
4. ANY VEHICLE WHICH THE ODOMETER HAS BEEN BROKEN, DISCONNECTED, ALTERED OR CORRECT MILEAGE CANNOT BE
READILY DETERMINED.
5. ANY REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE IF USED FOR RACING, OFF-ROAD USE, RENTAL, HIRE TO THE PUBLIC, DELIVERY, COMMERCIAL
OR EMERGENCY PURPOSES.
6. NON-COVERED PARTS CAUSING DAMAGE TO COVERED PARTS OR ANY LOSS OCCURRING PRIOR TO EXPIRATION OF
MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY, RECALL, OR REPAIR GUARANTEE.
7. LOSS OF TIME, USE OF VEHICLE, CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, OR INJURY TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY RESULTING FROM
THE FAILURE OR REPLACEMENT OF ANY PARTS LISTED IN PARAGRAPH 1. – SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW EXCLUSION OR
LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THIS LIMITATION/EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
8. REPAIRS AS A RESULT OF ALTERATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER OR FAILURE TO PERFORM

So if your transmission fails, all they have to do is say it was caused by the fluid, or a fluid leak, and thus isn't covered. The dealer service department will submit warranty claims and will state the cause of failure.
If your engine overheats because your thermostat is bad, or you have a coolant leak, it's not covered. Thermostats can wear out and need replacing. Engine overheating (or coolant leaking) does not result in catastrophic damage if caught in time and corrected.
If your D5 weighs over 2000 pounds, it's not covered (I think they really mean 1 ton capacity, but that's not what the contract says). N/A.
If you take your D5 off road (even if the failure isn't due to being off road), it isn't covered. If any covered mechanical or drive line failures occur, they will never have occurred off road.
If you have a leak of any kind (routine maintenance will prevent or correct this), it isn't covered and neither is the damage the leak causes. The only leak that could cause serious damage would be a battery acid leak, which would be the responsibility of the battery manufacturer (when my OEM battery dies next year I'll be replacing it with an Odyssey 49-950).
Then, there were a lot of other things not covered including electrical, body, interior: ITEMS NOT COVERED: Any normal maintenance item including tires, wheels, struts, shocks, brake shoes or pads, rotors or drums, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, lubricants, clutch, pressure plate or clutch release bearing and tune-up items. Normal wear and tear items. No warranty covers those.
Exhaust or emission parts (state laws require vehicle manufactures to cover these separately beyond normal warranties), sound reproduction components, collision avoidance, lane departure warning system and safety restraint systems, lighting, wiring harness, telephone, clock, television and navigation equipment. Any body parts, interior parts, trim, glass, paint, air bag system and keyless entry/anti-theft. Engine, transmission, transfer case, and differential are the components I'm most concerned about. They're expensive to repair and the peace-of-mind to get them covered to 100,000 miles is worth the cost of the warranty to me.
And then, if you ever get them to pay for a repair, they can install used parts (dealers won't, and non-dealers won't if I tell them not to), and they don't pay for diagnostic charges, taxes, fluids, and shop charges (chump change):
At the option of the Administrator, failed parts may be replaced with new, like kind or good quality remanufactured, rebuilt, used, or after-market parts. Always new, and I'll pay the difference, if necessary.

@1979rover - For close to 15 years I thought a Disco Diesel would be my forever car, yet we have a 19 TD SE on lease with 2.5 years remaining & I'm already planning next steps. Like you, tax advantageous through a business however I look at leasing as the ultimate hedge. If the buyout is less than market value, that's a flip. And if buyout is greater than market, turn it in and thank you for subsidizing my lifestyle / business. Just a thought - we turned in a Landy once six months early and over on total KMs as their incentives were too good. Is that possible for you here?

That said, I have no intention to trade my Solihull-built D5 (which just got the 32,000 mile service and is still like new) because I couldn't get a 2020 equipped the way I'd want it and the 2021s aren't available with the Td6 diesel engine. I'm hard over for diesel in off-road vehicles and trucks for several reasons:
1. Fuel economy. As everyone knows, diesel engines get much better mileage than gasoline engines.
2. Torque. Diesel engines have much more low-RPM torque than gasoline engines, which is why they're better for towing and low speed operations (such as off-road driving). My GMC Duramax diesel truck has so much torque that the engine throws the truck around like it's a toy. The truck weighs 7600 lbs but it feels like a toy.
3. Safety. Diesel fuel is much less volatile than gasoline so it's safer to carry large quantities of extra fuel in suitable containers on long overland adventures.
4. Low susceptibility to overheating. It's not a proper summer in Las Vegas unless July temperatures hit 115° F. Diesel-powered vehicles are impervious to the heat.
It'll be at least 3 years before I think of getting another vehicle but I'll definitely consider leasing.
Great points all, love the rental analogy! I am 100% sold on diesel. Having lived through the drinking gas like a drunk LR3 HSE V8 & the improbably thirsty Disco Sport dang it if JLR / Tata stop or delay selling them in NA again.
If there's none available when we're done, I've been eyeing up this car company based in Normal IL....

Even though I chose to buy my 2017 D5 (and paid it off in 2 years) I've never been opposed to leasing. I sold cars for a year and touted a lease as being a 3-year test drive, after which you can choose to keep it or not based on the rationale you mentioned regarding the buyout vs. market value at the time. Not only that but if something happens to it during the lease period (parking lot dings, etc.), it's not so upsetting because you're just renting it.

I had some conversations with the dealer who sold me my current D5 Td6 and looked into swapping it out. I'm over on miles, but not crazy so and I think the residual payoff might be a tad over market value, but in the ballpark.
The net net is, they couldn't locate another comparably equipped Td6. I got mine for a pretty good deal and all the 2020's they showed me either had fewer options for the same (or more) money than I originally paid or were loaded to the gills and overpriced.
I've only got 4 payments left and I was told JLR will pick up 3 of them if I roll into another JLR vehicle. I'm about 85% sure I'll be keeping this one as I don't feel the '21s will be that much of a leap forward. But since none are currently available, I'm going to sit tight. Also, I'm really tempted to look into the TdI chip that is on sale, which would encourage me to keep it as well.
I'm certainly going to look into the PenFed extended warranty. However it's a little concerning the number of exclusions (particularly lighting and electrical) I'm reading in this.
I'll keep everyone posted.

One more thing about that PenFed offered warranty: When it mentioned Premium Vehicles, it listed a few that were in that category and a few MB models it would not cover.
I would not be surprised if they have a longer list of premium vehicles as there are certainly a lot of others they didn't list. But there may also be a long list of vechicles they won't cover.
Would be worth asking them about your D5 before too long as there might be other alternative warranty companies if PenFed's doesn't work.
As for a new D5 vs. keeping your old one: it seems like it would be much harder to spec out a new one the way you want. I looked online at them but am having trouble finding the build site now. Looking at 2021's it seemed you could only get the oyster or black interior with the one model and not the other (I don't recall which). Not sure about wheel sizes but 20 inch is as big as you can go and get decent off road tires. Plus you know your existing D5 and if you've fixed or not had certain problems with it and a new one might get you started all over. Plus taxes and license plates and insurance on the new one start at a higher level. Of course your old one doesn't have that new car smell.

Well...If I could add my .02.
I got the Ext. Warranty from the LR dealer. It is the 100K 7 year deal. 250.00 deductible. BUT...I am able to use the LR dealer.
I would think long and hard about an "outside" Ext. Warranty...You might find your on the short end of the stick. I am not afraid of paying the 250 ded...But I am afraid of the 5K items.
